Box Score 2 St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team fell twice to NYU in the Bears' UAA opener on Saturday at Kelly Field.
WashU dropped game one in 10 innings, 9-8 and fell in game two 10-3 (F/6). Game two was called after six innings of play due to darkness.
NYU remains unbeaten at 11-0 on the season and moves to 2-0 in league play, while the Bears slip to 6-9 on the year and drop to 0-2 in the UAA.
Game one – NYU 9. WashU 8 (F/10)
The Bears got off to a good start as senior Bo Anderson ripped an RBI double to right field to score Tim Van Kirk for a 1-0 lead.
Later on in the inning, Harry Mauterer's sac fly would bring home Clayton Miller to extend the Bears' advantage out to 2-0.
In the bottom of the third, WashU continued to bring in more runs, following a two-RBI double to right center from Andrew Huang, pushing WU ahead 4-0.
The Bears held NYU scoreless through the first four frames, but the Violets would tack on five runs in the fifth. A two-RBI double through the left side propelled NYU ahead 5-4, marking its first lead of the day.
WashU responded in the bottom of the inning, as Broghan O'Connor smashed a two-RBI triple to deep center to take a 6-5 edge.
Mauterer recorded his second RBI of the afternoon with a double to left center to score O'Connor.
The Bears had a great opportunity to extend the lead in both the seventh and eighth innings after loading up the bases with just one out, but back-to-back outs ended both frames, stopping the Bears' momentum.
WU stranded 14 baserunners throughout the contest in game one, while NYU left 11 runners on base.
Leading 7-5, NYU rallied back in the eighth with three runs to reclaim the lead at 8-7.
Needing a run to tie up the contest in the ninth, Kaden Bernhard delivered a clutch RBI single to right field, scoring Zac Malis.
However, NYU went back in front in the 10th inning, scoring the winning run off an RBI single to left.
WashU battled in the final frame, putting the winning run on first following a two-out single from Anderson, but the Bears were unable to score the tying run.
As a team, the Bears compiled 16 hits throughout the game as Huang and Clayton Miller each tabbed three hits, while Anderson, Mauterer, and Van Kirk finished with two hits apiece.
Miller led the Bears with three RBI as he and Huang tallied a team-best two doubles.
Sebastian Guzman got the start on the bump, striking out four in four innings of work. Kyle Coates pitched the remaining four innings in relief, allowing one earned run.
Will Henkel, who was tabbed with the loss, struck out four in two innings pitched.
Game two- NYU 10, WashU 3
After a leadoff triple from Van Kirk the Bears got off to another fast start.
The Bears went ahead 1-0 after an RBI from Huang, but were unable to maintain its advantage as NYU would score two runs in the next half inning off an error.
In the third, the Violets broke through with five runs on six hits to take a 7-1 lead.
Zac Styka's two-RBI double in the bottom of the fourth sliced the deficit down to 7-3 as Jack Miller and Mauterer both scored.
WashU was limited to only five hits in the loss and the Violets would plate three more runs of insurance in the top of the sixth to pull away 10-3.
NYU's starting pitcher Ashwin Chona received the win, tossing a complete game in the six innings played. Austin Sachen, the starter for the Bears, was delt with the loss.
Van Kirk notched his fourth straight multi-hit game and currently holds a seven-game hitting streak.
The Bears will conclude the series on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 10 AM.
