Box Score 2 Elizabethtown, Ky. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team split on its final day of spring break play, falling to DePauw before coming back to defeat Spalding. The Bears return to St. Louis with a 12-4 record.
Game 1: DePauw 6, WashU 2
DePauw opened with a run in the top of the first inning. Emma Konrad led off with a double to left center and moved forward on a Caleigh Cramer sac bunt. Konrad went on to score, unearned, on a Bears' throwing error.
The Tigers added two more runs in the top of the second inning.
Drew Bratcher hit a lead-off homer to center field to take a 2-0 lead. Jade Mejia Wick then drew a walk and Kate Geary reached on a fielder's choice then stole second. Geary moved to third on a Konrad grounder and then scored as Cramer reached on an error.
The Tigers continued to add runs, scoring two more in the top of the third inning to take a 5-0 lead over the Bears.
Emily Timberman singled through the left side and Paige Price reached base on a fielding error. Goose Moore, who was running for Timberman, stole second to put herself in scoring position and then headed home on a Bratcher single through the right side. Mejia Wick loaded the bases with a bunt single and then Geary drew a walk, bringing in Price.
After three scoreless innings for both teams, DePauw added its final run in the top of the seventh. Bratcher singled to center and Mejia Wick doubled down the left field line, advancing Bratcher to third. Bratcher ultimately scored on a passed ball for a 6-0 lead.
The Bears scored their two runs of the game in the bottom of the seventh, starting with a Payton Irwin triple to right field. Erin Reardon then singled through the right side, scoring Irwin.
Nicole Hay sent a single through the right side and, with one out, Katie Gould reached first on a fielding error, bringing in Reardon.
Reardon went 1-for-2 with one run scored and one RBI while Irwin finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Madison Denton took the loss in the circle, pitching one inning and allowing three runs and two hits. Jordan Rossi came on in relief to pitch six innings, allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out three.
Game 2: WashU 14, Spalding 1
The Bears came out to score four runs in the top of the first inning.
With one out, Maggie Baumstark singled through the left side and scored on a Tami Wong double. Ashley Kennedy then drilled a homer to left center, scoring Wong. Eimear Cunningham reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a double to left center from Hay.
After forcing three quick outs for Spalding in the first and second innings, WashU had another big at-bat, scoring five runs in the top of the third.
Kennedy started things off with a one-single to left and then stole second. Pilpil singled through the left side and advanced on the throw, giving Kennedy time to score. Cunningham then drew a walk and Hay singled up the middle to load the bases.
Taylor Geluck singled through the left side, scoring Pilpil and loading the bases again. All the runners advanced on a wild pitch, with Olivia Craycraft, who was running for Kennedy, scoring. Hay then scored on another wild pitch and Geluck headed to third. Geluck finally scored on a Kirsten Drabek single through the left side, putting WashU up 9-0.
Spalding left a runner stranded in the bottom of the third inning and the Bears added two more runs in the top of the fourth.
Wong led off with a homerun to center and Kennedy followed with a single to left. Pilpil was out at first on her at-bat, but Kennedy scored on the play to put WashU up 11-0.
Spalding scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Bella Velez reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Grayce Marcum double to center.
WashU scored its final three runs of the game in the top of the fifth inning.
Baumstark hit a one-out single to left field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Kennedy reached on a fielding error and both runners scored on a Pilpil triple to right field. Craycraft then singled to center to score Pilpil.
Spalding could not put anything else together in the bottom of the fifth inning, ending things early with a Bears' win.
Kennedy finished 3-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBI. Pilpil went 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored while Hay went 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored.
Holly Stoner picked up the win in the circle, pitching four innings and allowing just two hits and one run while striking out two. Emma Urban came on in relief for one inning, striking out two.
The Bears return to action on Tuesday with a nearby road game against Webster at 4:30 p.m. WashU hosts Brandeis next weekend in the first UAA series in more than two years.
