Box Score 2 St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team put together two quality performances on Sunday, defeating Ozarks 6-2 in game one and 15-3 (F/7) in game two at Kelly Field.
WashU has won five consecutive games and improve to 6-7 on the season as Ozarks drops to 4-15.
The Bears had two big pitching performances on the day, as Austin Sachen and Matt Bauer, who both got the nod on the mound in game one and two, both posted single-game career highs in strikeouts with 11 apiece.
WashU's pitching staff combined for 25 strikeouts in the Bears' two victories on Sunday.
Game one- WashU 6, Ozarks 2
Austin Sachen set the tone early, fanning six batters through the first three frames, while holding the Eagles to one hit.
WashU took the opening lead in the bottom of the first following a two-run homer from Andrew Huang.
Huang finished the contest 2-3 from the plate with 3 RBI, including a double and a home run.
Holding on to a 2-0 lead, Sachen continued to be in command, shutting out the Ozarks in the fourth-fifth-and sixth innings.
The Bears would extend the lead after tabbing three runs in the third. An RBI from Tim Van Kirk started the scoring, while a sac fly from Clayton Miller and an RBI double from Huang pushed the Bears' advantage out to 5-0.
Sachen sent the Ozarks down in order in the fifth and sixth innings, but UO would break through in the seventh, scoring a run off an infield RBI groundout.
Van Kirk hit his second homer of the weekend in the bottom half of the seventh to keep the Bears well in front.
Ozarks threatened again in the eighth, but reliever Matt Lopes limited the damage to just one run.
Kyle Coates pitched in the final inning to record the final three outs to preserve the Bears victory.
Along with Huang, Van Kirk recorded two hits with two RBI and scored two runs to lead the Bears' offensive attack.
Game two- WashU 15, Ozarks 3
WashU dominated game three of the series right from the start, using a complete team effort all around.
The Bears scored all of their runs through the first five innings of play, as they completed the game with 12 hits in total, compiling six extra base hits in the game, with five doubles and a triple.
Zac Styka led the Bears with four RBI in game two, while Magnus Dunn notched a three-hit performance, a team-high.
Dunn has recorded a mult-hit game in six of the past eight contests, while Van Kirk extended his hitting streak to five games.
In addition, Huang finished with five hits and three doubles for the series.
Matt Bauer was in control early, registering eight strikeouts through the first three innings of play.
The Ozarks scored two runs in the top of the first, but the Bears wasted no time reclaiming the lead with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
With the bases stacked, Zac Styka drew a walk to bring in the first run and then Harry Mauterer connected on a two-RBI double to deep left center, scoring both Jack Miller and Magnus Dunn.
WashU pounced on the Eagles in the second frame, with five runs on three hits. Highlighting the inning was an RBI triple from Tim Van Kirk followed by an RBI double from Magnus Dunn.
Leading 8-2, the Bears added two more runs in the third, as Dunn recorded another RBI with a single through the left side, scoring first-year Anthony Gross.
Dunn would later cross the plate off a passed ball to make it 10-2 Bears. Dunn scored a team-high four runs in the victory.
WU scored another run in the fourth inning, as Bauer shutout Ozarks through the second, third, and fourth innings.
The Bears put the finishing touches on the game in the fifth inning with four runs on four hits.
Jack Miller and Zac Malis both brought in a run off RBI singles, while Styka smacked a two-RBI double down the left field line.
Holding a 15-3 lead, Clayton Miller pitched in relief for the final two innings, striking out two batters while allowing no runs or hits.
WashU will next open UAA play at home on Friday against NYU at Kelly Field.
