Box Score 2 Elizabethtown, Ky. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team scored a total of 29 runs on Saturday in wins over Wittenberg and Transylvania to improve to 11-3 on the season.
Game 1: WashU 15, Wittenberg 5
The Bears put two runs on the board right away in the top of the first inning.
With one out, Maggie Baumstark singled to short and advanced on a Tami Wong fielder's choice play. Ashley Kennedy drew a walk to load the bases and Eimear Cunningham drove in the first two runs of the game with a single to right, scoring Baumstark and Wong.
After a scoreless second inning for both teams, the Bears added another two runs in the top of the third inning.
Baumstark led off with a single to center and Wong drew a walk. Kennedy singled to second to load the bases again for WashU. Nicole Hay hit a sac fly to center, scoring Baumstark. With two outs, Natalia Pilpil singled to short, bringing in Wong to give the Bears a 4-0 lead.
Wittenberg scored three of its five runs in the bottom of the third inning.
With one out, Julia Burch reached on a Bears' throwing error and Clare Andersen singled to center to put her in scoring position. Hanna Ecker reached on a fielder's choice and then advanced to third on a throwing error, allowing Burch and Anderson to score. Diana Quevedo then hit a sac fly to center to bring in Ecker.
WashU answered with six runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Erin Reardon led off with a bunt single and then Katie Gould singled to the pitcher. A throwing error by first base sent Reardon to third and then Gould stole second. Baumstark was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Wong drove in Reardon and Gould with a single right field.
Kennedy then singled to left field to score Baumstark and Eimear Cunningham reached on a fielding error, giving Wong time to score.
With one out, Pilpil reached on a fielder's choice and Kennedy scored. Kirsten Drabek drew a walk and Taylor Geluck drove in Cunningham with a grounder to third, putting the Bears ahead 10-3.
After forcing three quick Wittenberg outs in the bottom of the fourth, WashU came out to score another two runs in the top of the fifth.
Baumstark hit a lead-off single to left field. With one out, Kennedy doubled down the left field line, scoring Baumstark. Cunninghamf followed with another double down the left field line, bringing in Kennedy for a 12-3 Bears' lead.
Wittenberg added two runs in the bottom of the inning, starting with an Elise Freeland walk. Andersen then walked and both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. With two outs, Quevedo singled to right, bringing both Freeland and Andersen home.
The Bears added their final three runs in the top of the seventh inning, starting with a Wong walk. Kennedy then singled to left field and both runners advanced on a Cunningham pop up. Hay singled to right field to score Wong and Pilpil drove in Kennedy and Hay with a double to right center, securing the 15-5 lead for WashU.
Kennedy went 4-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored while Baumstark finished 3-for-4 with four runs scored and nine putouts as the catcher. Cunningham went 2-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored while Pilpil also went 2-for-5 with three RBI.
Holly Stoner picked up the win in the circle, pitching four innings with no earned runs, just one hit and two strikeouts. Jordan Rossi came on in relief for the final three innings, allowing two runs and notching five strikeouts.
Game 2: WashU 15, Transy 3
The Bears once again got on the board first, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Gould led off with a triple to left followed by a Baumstark walk. Wong then singled to left, bringing in Gould. Baumstark and Wong each moved up a base on a wild pitch and Baumstark scored on a Kennedy sac fly to center.
Cunningham drew a walk and Pilpil singled to short, bringing in Wong for a 3-0 lead for the Bears.
After leaving a Transy runner stranded in the top of the second, WashU came out to score two more in the bottom of the inning.
Both Drabek and Wong sent solo homeruns to left center during the inning to give WashU a 5-0 edge.
Transy came out to score three runs in the top of the third inning to cut the Bears lead to 5-3.
Becca Messin led off with a walk and Cadee Baker then singled to left. Stella Wulke advanced the runners with a sac bunt and then, with two outs, Taylor Sente homered to center, clearing the bases.
WashU put up another run in the bottom of the third inning, starting with Cunningham reaching base on an error and advancing to second on a wild pitch. Payton Irwin drove in Cunningham with a single to right center, bumping the Bears' lead to 6-3.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Bears added another run in the bottom of the fourth.
Pilpil drew a lead-off walk and was pinch run for by Olivia Craycraft. Irwin singled to left center and then Gould singled to the pitcher to bring in Craycraft.
WashU exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game early with the 14-3 win.
Reardon led off with a single to shortstop. With one out, Pilpil singled through the left side and Irwin drew a walk to load the bases. Hay singled up the middle to bring in Reardon and Pilpil and Drabek then singled to left, scoring Irwin.
Gould laid down a bunt single to move the runners up and load the bases. Baumstark then hit a grand slam to end the game.
Drabek went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Wong finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored while Pilpil went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run. Hay finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run while Baumstark went 1-for-4 with four RBI and two runs.
Jamie Burgasser pitched a complete game, allowing three runs and striking out seven to notch the win.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow with games against DePauw and Spalding at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. EDT, respectively.
