Claremont, Calif. – The No. 3 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team continued match play out in Southern California on Friday for the Stag-Hen Invitational at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps University.
WashU earned a 6-3 victory over Amherst in round one, but was edged 5-4 to No. 4 CMS in the semifinal round.
The Bears will play in the third-place match tomorrow of the Stag-Hen Invitational to close out their spring break trip in California.
WashU had great all-around doubles play from all three courts in both matches, as the Bears went 6-0 on the day in doubles.
Holding a 3-0 advantage against Amherst, WashU picked up three singles wins, winning all three matches in straight sets.
The Bears came up clutch in doubles play, as they won by the thinnest of margins on two courts at No. 2 and 3 doubles by scores of 8-7.
Luke Smith recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, while Gaurav Singh tallied a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the No. 4 spot.
Clinching the match for the Bears was John Fakouri at No. 6 singles, winning decisively ay 6-4, 6-1, putting WashU ahead 5-0.
In the Bears' semifinal match against No. 4 CMS, WashU built another 3-0 advantage after sweeping doubles with another flawless effort across the board.
However, the Stags rallied back in singles action as WashU was unable to pullout the victory. Five of the six singles matches went the distance, going three sets.
Jared Phillips recorded the Bears' lone win in singles at No. 5 after winning a hard-fought match, winning 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.
