Box Score 2 Wheeling, Ill. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team split with Lake Forest on Wednesday afternoon, winning the first game before falling the second game of the double-header. The Bears are now 9-3 on the season.
Game 1: WashU 7, Lake Forest 1
After a scoreless first inning for both teams, the Bears put up three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-0 edge.
Ashley Kennedy hit a lead-off single to centerfield and advanced to second on a Natalia Pilpil single to center. Payton Irwin then loaded the bases for WashU with a single to left field.
Eimear Cunningham drove in Kennedy and Pilpil with a single to center field and Nicole Hay followed that with a single to right, scoring Irwin.
The Bears loaded the bases again during the top of the second, but left all three runners stranded.
WashU added another run in the top of the third inning.
With two outs, Irwin doubled to left field and was driven in by a Cunningham single to right for a 4-0 Bears lead.
Lake Forest scored its first and only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Teagan Delarwelle led off with a single to right field. With two outs, Elena Chrisman singled to left and advanced to second on the throw, putting Delarwelle on third. Josie Klein was intentionally walked to load the bases for the Foresters and Angelle Bills drove in Delarwelle with a single to center.
The Bears made it a 5-1 game in the top of the sixth inning.
Katie Gould single to left field and then, with two outs, Tami Wong also sent a single to left to put Gould in scoring position. Kennedy singled to left and advanced to second on the throw, giving Gould time to score.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Bears put up their last two runs.
With two outs, Kirsten Drabek singled to left field and Gould drew a walk. Maggie Baumstark then singled to center to load the bases for WashU. Wong drove in the final two runs with a single to center, bringing home Drabek and Gould.
Cunningham went 2-for-3 with three RBI while Drabek finished 2-for-3 with one run scored. Wong hit 2-for-4 with two RBI and Kennedy went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run.
Holly Stoner picked up the win in the circle, pitching 4.2 innings with just four hits. Jordan Rossi came in for the save with 2.1 innings of relief and three strikeouts.
Game 2: Lake Forest 3, WashU 1
Lake Forest put a run on the board in the bottom of the first inning, starting with a Chrisman single to center field. Bills then followed with a single to right field and both runners advanced a base on and error. Kelly Collins drove in Chrisman to put the Foresters up 1-0.
After four scoreless innings for both teams, Lake Forest put up two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Collins led off with a single and Kaylee Purgatorio singled to left field then both runners advanced on the throw. Cheyenne Pellettiere drove in Collins with a sac fly to center field. Purgatorio then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Julia McMullen single to right field, putting the Foresters up 3-0.
WashU scored its lone run in the top of the seventh inning.
Gould singled to center to start things off and advanced to second on a Baumstark single. Both runners moved forward on an error by the catcher and Gould went on to score on a single to right from Kennedy. A pop out, however, ended the inning and the game, leaving two Bears' runners stranded.
Kennedy finished 2-for-3 with one RBI while Cunningham and Drabek each went 1-for-2.
Jamie Burgasser took the loss in the circle, going five innings and allowing six hits and three runs while striking out three batters.
The Bears hit the road this weekend for a four-game slate in Kentucky where they will face Wittenberg, Transylvania, DePauw and Spalding.
