Box Score Orange, Calif. – The No. 21 Washington University in St. Louis women's tennis team defeated Chapman 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon to improve to 8-1 on the season.
After losing their first match of the year yesterday, the Bears came out strong to sweep doubles to take a 3-0 edge.
Karen Gao and Ainsley Heidbreder defeated Aliya Allyn and Olivia Desso 8-5 at first doubles while Katherine Johnston and Divya Sharma beat Alexis Golin and Lucy Erickson 8-6 at second doubles. Maggie Yang and Carolyn Tsung topped Goldie La and Racquel Fhima 8-7 (7-5) at third doubles.
WashU went on to pick up wins at second and sixth singles to take the match.
Sophia Huynh beat La at second singles 6-1, 6-3. Tsung won her first college singles match and clinched the victory with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 win at sixth singles over Katherine Monroy.
Gao retired at first singles after going down 5-0 to Allyn in the first set. Heidbreder fell 6-2, 6-2 to Golin at third singles while Hannah Johnston lost 6-7 (3), 6-2, 10-7 at fourth singles. Katherine Johnston was defeated by Erickson 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at fifth singles.
The Bears round out their California trip with a 10 a.m. PT match against Bowdoin (at Pomona-Pitzer) tomorrow.
