Box Score 2 St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team swept Westminster in a non-conference double-header on Monday afternoon. The Bears are now on a four-game winning streak and are currently 8-2 on the season.
Game 1: WashU 12, Westminster 0
WashU wasted no time in putting runs on the board, scoring five in the first inning off of four hits.
Katie Gould drew a walk to lead off the game and then scored on a Maggie Baumstark double to centerfield. Baumstark moved ahead on a passed ball and then scored on a Natalia Pilpil single through the left side.
Eimear Cunningham then drew a walk, advancing Pilpil into scoring position. Nicole Hay drilled a single to right field and went to second on the throw, giving Pilpil time to score and putting Cunningham on third.
The final two runs of the inning scored on a Kirsten Drabek single to left field. She advanced to third on the throw, allowing Cunningham and Hay to score for a 5-0 lead.
After three quick Westminster outs in the top of the second inning, the Bears put three more runs on the board in the bottom.
Gould drew another walk to lead off and then stole second. Baumstark ripped a single to short and Gould headed home.
Tami Wong singled to left field and moved forward a base on a Payton Irwin walk. Pilpil also drew a walk to load the bases for the Bears. Both Irwin and Wong scored on a Hay single to center, giving the Bears a 8-0 edge over the Bluejays.
WashU forced another quick outs for Westminster and went to work in the bottom of the third to score three more runs.
Catryn Cattoor was hit by a pitch in the lead-off spot. Gould sent a single through the left side and both Talkow, who was running for Cattoor, and Gould advanced a base. Both runners then moved up another base on a passed ball.
Baumstark ripped a triple to left center, bringing in Talkow and Gould. Wong then hit a sac fly to right field, scoring Baumstark for the 11-0 lead.
The Bluejays recorded their second hit of the game in the top of the fourth inning, but the Bears left that runner stranded and headed to the plate again in the bottom of the inning.
Olivia Craycraft drew a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a Hay ground to short. Drabek grounded out to third but Craycraft scored on the throw to give the Bears the 12-0 lead. Westminster went three-up and three-down in the top of the fifth to give WashU the win.
Baumstark finished 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored. Hay went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored while Drabek went 1-for-3 with three RBI. Gould finished 1-for-1 with three runs scored.
Madison Denton picked up the win in the circle, pitching four innings, allowing just two hits and recording a strikeout.
Game 2: WashU 13, Westminster 0
The Bears jumped out quickly again to start the second game, making quick work of Westminster's first three batters and then scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Gould led off with a single to second and advanced to both second and third on two passed balls. Baumstark drew a walk and then stole second before Wong hit a three-run homer to left field, scoring Gould and Baumstark.
Ashley Kennedy singled through the right side and scored on a Pilpil double to left center to give WashU a 4-0 lead.
The Bears retired three quick batters for the Bluejays in the top of the second inning and then scored five runs in the bottom of the inning.
Brooke Capparelli drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a Taylor Geluck single.
Gould grounded out to second, giving Capparelli time to score and Geluck time to get to third base. Wong followed up with a double to left field, bringing in Baumstark.
Pilpil put down a ball to the catcher and advanced to second on the throw, bringing in Kennedy and Erin Reardon, who had come in to pinch run for Wong.
Westminster notched its first hit of game two as Kendall Weber singled to center. Maddie Marrero then drew a walk to put two runners on, but the Bears for a pop up and a strikeout to end the inning.
In the bottom of the third, WashU added four more runs on three hits.
Geluck hit a lead-off triple to center field. Gould brought Geluck in with a sac fly to center, pushing the Bears lead to 10-0. Baumstark followed with a walk and stole second, then advanced to third on a Reardon bunt, which she beat out at first.
Kennedy drilled a triple down the right field line, bringing in Baumstark and Reardon. Pilpil then scored Kennedy with a grounder to short.
Neither team scored any runs in the fourth inning and Westminster did not put up any runs in the fifth, ending the game in favor of the Bears 13-0.
Kennedy finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored while Wong went 2-for-2 with four RBI and a run scored. Pilpil finished 2-for-3 with four RBI and Geluck went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Jordan Rossi earned her first win of her collegiate career, pitching four innings and allowing just one hit while striking out four batters.
The Bears head to Lake Forest for a double-header on Wednesday at 1 and 3 p.m., before heading to Kentucky for a four-game spring break trip.
