Box Score Winter Haven, Fla. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team suffered a 10-5 loss on Monday afternoon to Anderson University (Ind.) in Winter Haven, Fla. at the RussMatt Central Florida Invite.
The Bears opened the game with the early lead in the bottom of the first after a sacrifice fly from Tim Van Kirk scored Brandon Buday, who reached initially on a leadoff triple.
Anderson scored one run each in the next two frames, scoring a run in the second off an RBI double and another off an RBI single to center in the third inning.
WU had two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the third, but the opportunity was squandered, as the Bears came away empty-handed.
WashU went back in front in the fourth, tying the game off a successful double steal, as Zac Styka stole second and Clayton Miller stole home.
In the ensuing at-bat, Kaden Bernhard's RBI double to left would bring Styka home, putting the Bears ahead 3-2.
However, WashU was unable to hold on to the lead as they committed three errors in the field in the fifth inning, allowing Anderson to bring in three runs on three hits.
Trailing 5-3, the Bears were held scoreless over the next four innings, going down in order in both the sixth and seventh innings.
The Ravens extended the lead in the sixth off a solo homer and then a three-RBI double in the seventh, before adding an additional run in the top of the ninth.
WashU tried to rally back in the ninth after Braden Mazone and Bernhard reached on back-to-back singles.
With the bases loaded and nobody out, Buday cut the deficit down to 10-5 as his two-RBI single up the middle scored both Hunter Goldberg and Mazone.
The Bears' ninth inning rally would come to a close shortly after, as Anderson collected three straight outs to end the game.
Buday tacked on his fourth straight multi-hit game of the season, leading WashU with two hits and two RBI.
Bernhard also finished with two hits apiece and an RBI, while the Bears posted eight hits on the day. Magnus Dunn, Clayton Miller, Styka, and Mazone all registered one hit apiece.
WashU will return to play again in a short turnaround, as they face Southern Maine tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM EST.
