Softball Picks Up Two Wins Over Agnes Scott and MUW

Columbus, Miss. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team closed out opening weekend 4-0 after picking up wins over Agnes Scott College and the Mississippi University for Women (MUW) on Sunday.

The Bears eight-run ruled both teams, defeating Agnes Scott 9-0 in six innings to open the day and closing it out with a 10-2 win over MUW in five innings.

WashU 9, Agnes Scott 0 (six innings)

The Bears opened strong, putting up two runs in the first inning.

Katie Gould led off with a double down the left field line and oved ahead to third on a Maggie Baumstark single. Baumstark advanced to second on the throw, putting two runners in scoring position.

A Payton Irwin single through the left side drove in Gould and put Baumstark on third. Baumstark then scored on a Natalia Pilpil sacrifice fly to give WashU an early 2-0 edge.

After forcing three quick outs for the Scotties in the bottom of the first, the Bears got back to work in the top of the second, putting up two more runs.

With one out, Kayla Nommensen drilled homerun to right field to give WashU a 3-0 lead.

Gould then laid down a bunt and Tami Wong sent a single left field. Both Wong and Gould moved forward, with Gould scoring on a passed ball to take a 4-0 lead.

The Bears again made quick work of Agnes Scott in the bottom of the second with three up and three down then scored another two runs in the top of the third inning.

Pilpil homered to centerfield for a 5-0 run. With two outs, Brooke Capparelli reached on an error by short stope and then scored when Nommensen reached on an error.

After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning, the Bears ended things with three runs in the top of the sixth.

With one out, Gould singled through the right side and then stole second before Wong drew a walk.  Emily Talkow, who came in to pinch run for Wong, stole second and Gould stole third to put both runners in scoring positon.

Gould scored on a sacrifice fly from Baumstark and Talkow scored on an Irwin triple to center. Pilpil followed up with a triple to left, scoring Irwin and giving the Bears a 9-0 lead.

Gould went 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Pilpil finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored. Irwin also finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored while Baumstark went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

Madison Denton picked up her second win of the weekend in the circle, striking out two and allowing no hits in four innings of work. Cassie Metzger came on in relief to pitch two innings, allowing one hit and striking out three.

WashU 10, MUW 2 (five innings)

MUW scored both of its runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jessica Deming led off with a single to left field and then stole second base. Riley Phillips drove in Deming with a double to left center, giving MUW a 1-0 edge. Madison Crosby followed that with a double to right center, scoring Phillips for a 2-0 lead.

The Bears tied things up in the top of the second inning, as Kirsten Drabek homered down the left field line, scoring Nicole Hay.

WashU put up two more runs in the top of the third inning.

With two outs, Baumstark drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Pilpil then reached first on an error, scoring Baumstark. Another error put Irwin on first and scored Pilpil to give WashU a 4-2 lead over the Owls.

The Bears best inning was the top of the fourth, as they scored six runs for a 10-2 advantage.

Drabek led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a passed ball. Nommensen then drew a walk and Taylor Geluck bunted to load the bases for the Bears.

Gould drove in Drabek with a single and Nommensen scored on a Wong single to right field. Geluck and Gould both scored on Pilpil single. WashU put up the final two runs of the game as Wong and Pilpil both scored on a Hay single through the right side.

Drabek went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored while Hay finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.

Jamie Burgasser pitched a complete game, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out seven.

The Bears hit the road for a doubleheader next Sunday, March 6 at Millikin slated for a 1 p.m. start.
