Mayfield, Ohio – The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over No. 4 seed Trinity University on Sunday morning at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
With the victory, the Bears close out the championships on a high note, finishing in third place as they improve to 3-2 on the year.
WashU wasted no time in building an early lead thanks to a clean sweep in doubles, winning all three courts after solid play from top to bottom in the lineup.
At No. 3 doubles, John Fakouri and Gaurav Singh notched an 8-6 victory, winning the final two games of the match to pull away and put the Bears on the board.
WashU also collected a win at No. 2 doubles from Jeremy Ouyang and Scott Yamamoto, who finished off an 8-5 victory after the duo jumped ahead 7-3.
On the first doubles court, Abhi Ramireddy/Daniel Li outlasted their opponents down to the wire, 8-7.
Leading 3-0, WashU needed just two wins in singles play to secure the victory.
The Bears first got a win at No. 4 singles from Luke Smith, who posted a straight set 6-4, 7-5 decision. Smith rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the opening set and never trailed in the second.
Minutes later at No. 2 singles, Li clinched the deciding match for the Bears with a 6-4, 6-3 win in a match that lasted just under two hours.
Ramireddy was in front in his match at No. 1 singles, leading 6-4, 5-7, 2-0, but the match ended as incomplete since the Bears had already officially clinched the win.
WashU will return to action on March 5 at the Tao Tennis Center against Rhodes College.
