Softball Opens Season with a Pair of Wins

Columbus, Miss. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team opened its season with a pair of wins over Mississippi University for Women and Agnes Scott College.

The Bears defeated Mississippi University for Women (MUW) 6-3 in the first game of the day and came back to beat Agnes Scott 13-1 in five innings in game two of the day.

MUW got on the board first as Madison Crosby drove in Jessica Deming in the first inning.

The Bears went on to score six-straight runs across four innings to take a 6-1 lead.

In the top of the third inning with two outs, senior Katie Gould drew a walk and stole second to put herself in scoring position. Junior Tami Wong then reached first on an error by right field, allowing Gould to score and tie things up, 1-1.

With two outs in the top of the fourth inning, senior Kirsten Drabek sent a double to left field and then scored on a single to right field from junior Kayla Nommensen.

The Bears scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Gould started things off with a single through the left side before stealing second to put herself in scoring position. Wong then singled and Gould scored to give the Bears a 3-1 edge.

Wong moved up a base on a Maggie Baumstark single to left field and junior Payton Irwin drew a walk to load the bases. Senior Nicole Hay reached base on a fielder's choice as Olivia Craycraft, who was pinch running for Irwin was thrown out at second, allowing Wong to score. Baumstark scored the third fun of the inning as first-year Natalia Pilpil sent a single through the left side.

WashU scored its final run in the top of the sixth inning. Gould led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on a grounder from Baumstark. She then scored on a throwing error from the catcher, giving WashU a 6-1 edge.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, MUW added two more runs as Riley Phillips homered to left field, also bringing in Lauren Duckworth.

Gould finished 2-for-3 while Drabek went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Senior Madison Denton picked up the win in the circle, allowing six hits in six innings and striking out two. First-year Jamie Burgasser earned the save with two strike outs in one inning of work.

WashU 13, Agnes Scott 1 (5 innings)

The Bears started things off in a big way, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Gould led off with a walk and then stole second. Wong followed with a single to second, advancing to second on the throw and bring in Gould to go up 1-0.

Wong then advanced to third on a passed ball and came home on a Baumstark single. Baumstark stole second and then stole third following a Pilpil walk. Pilpil stole second and Baumstark stole home to go up 2-0.

Irwin singled through the left side to put runners on the corners, and then stole second. Both Pilpil and Irwin scored on a triple from Hay, bumping the score to 4-0. Hay added another run for the Bears as Drabek drove her in with sacrifice fly to left field.

First-year Taylor Geluck singled and advance to second on an error by right field, and then headed to third. Gould reached on an error by the pitcher and Geluck scored, giving the Bears a 6-0 edge early.

After a scoreless second inning for both teams, WashU but up six more runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Nommensen led off with a walk and advanced to second on a fielder's choice play for Geluck. With two runners on, Gould drilled a triple to left center, allowing both Nommensen and Geluck to score.

Wong was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners and first-year Emily Talkow, who came in to run for Wong advanced to second.

With two runners in scoring position, Baumstark singled and advanced to second on an error by center field, bringing in Gould and Talkow and giving the Bears a 10-0 advantage.

Baumstark was brought in on an Irwin double down the left field line.

Hay then reached first on an error by third base and Craycraft, who was running for Baumstark, advanced to third base. Drabek brought in the final run of the inning, sending a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing in Craycraft.

Agnes Scott put its first and only run on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Kat Fitzgerald drew a walk and then stole second. She then scored on a Jani Howington double to right center.

Hay finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored while Baumstark went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Senior Holly Stoner picked up the win in the circle, allowed no hits and no runs while striking out three in three innings of work.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow with an 11 a.m. game against Agnes Scott and a 1 p.m. game against MUW.
