Mayfield, Ohio – The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team fell 8-1 to Chicago on Saturday in the ITA National Team Indoor semifinals at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club.
Both teams entered the semifinal round coming off dramatic 5-4 victories on Friday,
WashU will conclude the championships tomorrow in the third-place match between Trinity University at 8:00 a.m. EST.
Despite the 8-1 score in favor of UC, several of the matches throughout the day were competitive and went right down to the wire.
The Bears were off to a good start, leading on all three courts in doubles action and were primed to take multiple points for an early lead.
However, the Maroons rallied back and won all three doubles points, edging WashU in the narrowest of margins, 8-7 in tiebreakers on all three courts.
Chicago carried its momentum over in singles play, winning five of the six matches.
Lucas Guy earned the lone victory for the Bears at No. 5 singles in three sets. Guy defeated Andrei Leonov 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
Junior Abhi Ramireddy and senior Luke Smith battled down the stretch but dropped their respective singles matches at No. 1 and No.4 in three sets.
Ramireddy fell 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 and Smith fell in a third-set 10-point tiebreaker 2-6, 7-6, 1-0.
