No. 9 Baseball Suffers 8-3 Loss to No. 15 Trinity

Box Score

Birmingham, Ala. – The No. 9 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team lost 8-3 to No. 15 Trinity University (Texas) on Sunday afternoon in Birmingham, Ala.

The Bears conclude their trip down south with an 0-3 record while Trinity moves to 2-1 on the season.

First-year pitcher Sebastian Guzman was solid in his Bears' debut, receiving a no-decision on the day, as he struck out six in five innings of work, while allowing only one earned run and three hits.

Guzman made quick work of the Tigers in the top of the first, and then the Bears' bats got things going in the bottom half of the inning, as Broghan O'Connor's RBI single to left scored Clayton Miller, who reached on a single to center earlier in the inning.

Guzman stayed dialed in and allowed just one hit over the next two frames with the Bears remaining in front 1-0.

Trinity broke through in the top of the fourth off an RBI double to right center, tying the contest at 1-1.

WashU was unable to answer in the fourth and fifth innings, as the Bears struggled to get hits off Trinity's starter, Samuel Conte, who struck out 11 on the day in six innings pitched.

In the top of the sixth, Trinity grabbed the lead with two runs on three hits. The Tigers' first run came via a solo homer to left center and then an RBI single to left field extended TU's lead out to 3-1.

After going down in order in the sixth, the Bears responded back in the bottom of the seventh with two crucial runs to tie up the game.

Dax Braemer singled to center to start off the inning, followed by a walk from Harry Mauterer to give the Bears two baserunners.

Following a sac bunt from Zac Malis to move runners into scoring position, Braden Mazone's RBI groundout scored Braemer to cut the lead down to 3-2.

In the next at-bat, an RBI from Tim Van Kirk would tie up the contest at 3-3.

Van Kirk and Brandon Buday, who reached on an infield single later in the inning, both advanced into scoring position as the Bears threatened to retake the lead, but WU came away empty-handed.

Trinity grabbed the lead in the eighth and would not surrender it thereafter. TU scored four runs on three hits, taking a 7-3 lead.  A two-RBI single to center gave Trinity a 5-3 cushion, as the Tigers added two more additional runs in the inning, both unearned runs.

WashU was unable to rally back, limited to only two hits in the final two innings. In total, WU stranded eight baserunners on the day.

Joseph Hettinger, who pitched two innings in relief was saddled with the loss.

Trinity reliever Joseph Chavana earned the win, striking out four in three innings pitched, while surrendering no earned runs.

Braemer collected his first multi-hit game of his career, posting a 2-4 effort at the plate. Braemer currently holds a three-game hitting streak in the 2022 season.

The Bears produced eight hits altogether and Trinity compiled 12 hits throughout Sunday's game.

WashU will host Buena Vista on Feb. 26-27 for the Bears' home-opening series. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
