No. 10 WashU Baseball Concludes Non-Conference Action With 12-4 Win Over Westminster

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Playing its final non-conference game of the regular season, the No. 10 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team scored in six of the eight innings it came to the plate as it picked up its 16th win of the season, taking down the Blue Jays of Westminster (Mo.) on Tuesday afternoon.

WC got things started quickly with a run on three hits in the top of the first. A leadoff single, a stolen base, and a wild pitch saw a runner on third with just one out. After a strikeout, the Blue Jays got a single through the right side that scored a run, putting themselves ahead 1-0.

However, that lead did not last long as the Bears answered immediately with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, sophomore Ryan Soong walked and then was able to reach third on a throwing error by the pitcher on a failed pickoff attempt. Junior Anthony Equale was then hit by a pitch and was caught stealing going to second. However, the throw to second allowed Soong to score, tying the game at 1-1.

WashU would take the lead in the bottom of the third for good. A leadoff walk by sophomore Kevin Stephens was followed by a sacrifice bunt by first-year Chance Cromer to advance Stephens to second. On an attempt to catch Stephens stealing third, an overthrow by the catcher went down the left field line and allowed Stephens to take another base on the error, scoring a run.

With bases empty, Soong hit a single to left and was followed by a walk to Equale. After a pitching change, on the second pitch that first-year Jacob Sitte saw, he hit a ground-rule double over the fence in left center that put Equale at third and scored Soong as the Bears took a 2-1 lead.

The Blue Jays got one of the runs back in the top of the fourth. With one out and bases loaded, a fielder's choice towards senior Shane Pellegrino at shortstop saw a run score and put runners on first and third.

WashU followed in its half of the inning by doubling its run total. With one out, sophomore Cooper Greene singled to left and stole second before Stephens picked up a four-pitch walk. A double steal later saw two runners in scoring position with one out. A throwing error by the second baseman saw Cromer reach first and take second on the error. Both Stephens and Greene scored on the play. A double steal by Soong and Cromer saw Cromer score from third, putting the Bears ahead 6-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, with one out, first-year Eli Sitzer reached on a throwing error and used it to reach second. Pellegrino then stepped in and launched his first home run of the season, putting WashU ahead by six runs, 8-2.

WC took advantage of a one-out walk to start the sixth, eventually scoring one run on a sacrifice fly to center field, trimming the lead down to 8-3. The Blue Jays followed with another run in the top of the seventh on another sacrifice fly, cutting the lead down even further to 8-4.

The Bears answered both runs in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Sitzer singled to center. After a strikeout, Greene slammed the second WashU home run of the game, scoring himself and Sitzer and putting the Bears back on top by six, 10-4.

Cromer led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to right center on the first pitch he saw before a flyout by Soong down the right field line. A bit of a blooper over the first baseman's outstretched arm saw Equale hit a double down the right field line, pushing Cromer to third. A single up the middle by Witte scored both Cromer and Equale for the final two runs of the contest, 12-4.

Soong, Witte, and Greene each had a multi-hit game for the Bears, as all three went 2-for-4 at the plate. Witte, Pellegrino, and Greene all had a multi-RBI game for WashU. In total, five extra-base hits were tallied by the Bears on the afternoon.

Senior Miles Quemuel-Labrador picked up the win in relief, pitching 2.1 innings while striking out three and allowing just one hit and one walk. He improved to 3-1 on the season. With his 10th appearance on the mound in 2026, he is now tied for third all-time in pitching appearances for the Bears.

WashU kicks off the conference portion of its season this weekend when Chicago comes to town. The Bears and Maroons will play a four-game UAA series, beginning with a single game on Friday, March 27 at 3 p.m. The two teams will then play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 28 beginning at noon. The weekend will wrap up on Sunday, March 29 with a single game starting at 11 a.m.
