Chesterfield, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team fell 5-4 to Division II opponent Southwest Baptist at the Woodsmill Tennis Club on Saturday evening in the Bears' first match of their 2022 slate. 

WashU battled until the very end, but fell just short, as they fall to 0-1 to start the spring season. 

Falling behind early, WashU had to play catch-up after dropping all three doubles matches by the score of 8-6. 

Trailing 3-0, the Bears responded with solid play in singles action and got themselves right back into the match.

Abhi Ramireddy cruised to a straight set victory at the top singles position, winning decisively 6-3, 6-2. 

All four of the Bears' winning singles matches came in straight sets, as Gaurav Singh took the victory at No. 3 singles in a highly competitive match 6-4, 7-6 (11), pulling out the win in a second set tiebreaker.  

Luke Smith and Jared Phillips both recorded wins at No. 4 and 5 singles, respectively. 

Smith took care of business 6-4, 6-1 and Phillips pulled away with great play in the second set, winning 7-5, 6-2. 

However, Southwest Baptist won both matches at No. 2 and 6 singles to clinch the victory.
