Four Reach Double-Figures as Men's Basketball Handily Defeats Fontbonne

St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis rolled past local foe Fontbonne, 81-46, on Wednesday evening. The Bears are now 6-2 overall.
 
Four Bears reached double-figures in the win, led by 18 points, six rebounds and three steals from sophomore Drake Kindsvater. Sophomore Hayden Doyle went 3-for-4 from 3-point range en route to a 16 point, 10 assist double-double as well as five rebounds and two blocks. The 10 assists marks a career high for Doyle. First-year Will Grudzinski netted 12 points and first-year Calvin Kapral chipped in 10 points.
 
After exchanging baskets in the opening minutes, the Bears went on an 11-0 run behind six points from graduate Charlie Jacob. A free throw from sophomore Tyler Van Eekeren closed out the run with WashU up 13-4 with 13:42 on the clock.
 
Fontbonne cut the Bears' lead to six points several times in the next few minutes, but WashU ultimately took its first double-digit lead at 7:07 following back-to-back 3-pointers from Kindsvater, prompting a Griffins' timeout.
 
The Bears continued to click offensively, building up its biggest lead of the game at that point, 25 points, as they went up 44-19 following a layup from Van Eekeren with 54 second remaining. Ultimately, WashU went into halftime with a 46-22 edge.
 
A layup from Kindsvater and a 3-pointer from Grudzinski gave the Bears a 53-24 lead with 17:32 on the clock, prompting an early timeout from the Griffins.
 
WashU's defense continued to stifle Fontbonne, limiting the Griffings to 13 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
 
Following a 3-pointer from Doyle with 9:28 on the clock, the Bears took their first 30-point lead, 67-37. That shot sparked a 12-0 run for WashU that put the team up 76-37 with 6:11 remaining. The Bears continued to limit chances for the Griffins until the buzzer, en route to the 35-point, 81-46, win.
 
As a team, the Bears outrebounded Fontbonne 34-18 and forced 20 Griffins' turnovers. Defensively, WashU held Fontbonne to 40 percent from the floor and 15.4 percent from 3-point range. WashU scored 24 points off of turnovers.
 
The Bears are back in action on Sunday at home with a 3 p.m. game against Principia. This is the final home game for WashU until the new year and, in conjunction with the women's team, will be for Mental Health Awareness. Fans are encouraged to wear green to support the cause.
