Indianapolis, Ind. – The Washington University in St. Louis track & field teams opened up the 2022-23 indoor season on Saturday with a great team performance at the UIndy Season Opener on the campus of the University of Indianapolis.Â

While no team scores were officially kept in the meet, it was still a great day for the Bears, who set six new all-time top-10 performance marks and recorded 14 total combined first-place finishes on Saturday.Â

WashU currently holds the No. 1 mark nationally in four events, including the men's and women's 4x400 relays, along with the women's Triple Jump and women's 800m.Â

On Saturday, the men's squad totaled an impressive nine first-place finishes throughout the day and the women finished with five.

Women's ResultsÂ
Ebun Opata, who had a fantastic 2021-22 season, highlighted the field events on Saturday for WashU, winning first in both the Long Jump and the Triple Jump, as she currently ranks first in the nation in the Triple Jump and second nationally in the Long Jump.Â

Opata notched a mark of 5.61m in the Long Jump and then posted an 11.97m mark in the Triple Jump.Â

Another big highlight on the evening for the Bears was in the Shot Put as first-year Jenae Bothe broke a new school record by collecting a mark of 13.09m for a third-place finish on Saturday. In addition, Bothe has the fifth-best mark in DIII after the conclusion of Saturday's meet.Â

Also in the Triple Jump, first-year Diya Shadaksharappa finished in third (11.05m) and ranks 12th in DIII, while Danielle Cuthbert was fourth overall with a mark of 10.70m.

In the Pole Vault, sophomore Yasmin Ruff was third overall (3.53m) and currently holds a top-five mark nationally listing fifth. Anna Curtis finished in eighth place (3.23m) and is 15th nationally through Saturday.Â

WashU saw more continued success on the track, as junior Emma Kelley had a superb effort in the 800m, claiming a first-place finish (2:10.51) which ranks No.1 in the nation. The Bears currently have five of the top-10 best times in the 800m nationally, as Aoife Dunne was runner-up (2:15.13) and ranks third, while Sophie Fox placed third (2:20.17) and ranks fifth.Â

Ruby Kaplan was fourth in the event and ranks seventh nationally and Virginia Pridgen is currently 10th in DIII for the event (2:24.92).Â
Sophomore Lauren Gay had another big meet on Saturday, compiling a first-place win in the 60-meter hurdles (9.13) and is sixth in all of DIII currently. Gay also was runner-up in the 200m (25.86) and holds the third-best time nationally.Â

Right behind Gay in the 200m was Kylie Spytek, who placed third (26.11) and set a new all-time top-10 performance mark and ranks seventh in school history. Nationally, Spytek currently boasts the fourth-best mark, while Nicole Stewart tied the ninth-best time in program history at 26.20 and holds the sixth-best time in DIII.Â

Gay, Dunne, Casey Kohlstruk, and Kelley claimed first in the 4x400 relay, tallying a total time of 4:04.58, which sits at the top stop currently in the country in DIII.Â

In the 60-meter dash, Spytek registered a runner-up finish (7.85) which set a new program all-time top-10 performance record. Spytek now has the sixth-best time in school history and as of Saturday, ranks eighth nationally in the event.Â

Additionally, Mycah Clay was fourth (7.85) and is eighth in DIII for the event, while first-year Jasmine Wright was fifth (7.89). Wright also set a new all-time top-10 performance mark, holding the ninth best time in school history.Â

Men's ResultsÂ

On the track, the Bears had a strong showing in the 60m run, with Moore earning his second first-place finish on the day with a time of 7.06, while Marcus-Jay Wilkes was third at 7.09. Moore's first-place effort in the prelims (6.99) ranks 20th currently in the nation.Â

WashU dominated the 400m run, placing six top-10 finishes in the race, including three in the top-five as junior Alex Djetto was first at 50.74 and Ryan Githiku was fourth (52.09) and Jack Henry Whetstone was fifth (52.31). Djetto's time of 50.74 is the 11th best in all of DIII through Saturday.Â

In the 800m, the Bears finished 1 & 2 as Arthur Santoro claimed first (1:55.03) and Jackson Cox was runner-up (1:55.13). Santoro currently ranks second nationally while Cox lists third.Â

The Bears also performed strongly in the 200m, as Moore recorded his third first-place finish on the day, crossing the finish line at 22.90, setting a new personal record in the event for his Bears' career. In addition, Moore ranks 14th in the nation in the 200m, while first-year Conor Daly also earned a first-place finish in the 3000m run with a mark of 8:49.43 and ranks ninth nationally.Â

In the 4x400 relay, WashU cruised to a dominant first-place finish as the team of Marcus-Jay Wilkes, Arthur Santoro, Jackson Cox, and Alex Djetto registered a time of 3:22.57, winning first by nearly nine full seconds. The group currently holds the number one spot in the nation.Â

In the field events, Matt Moore earned a first-place finish in the Long Jump with a mark of 6.97m, holding the seventh-best ranking in the nation, while Abayomi Awoyomi collected a runner-up finish at 6.48m.Â

Jalen Dural was fourth at 6.43m and Loucas Xenakis was sixth with a 6.31m mark in the event.Â
Â
Awoyomi also got the job done in the Triple Jump, collecting a first-place finish of 13.83m, which sets a new personal-best mark and the No. 8 all-time best mark in indoor events in program history. Furthermore, Awoyomi ranks sixth nationally in the event.Â

Senior Michael Snyder won the High Jump at 1.95m, currently holding the fifth-best mark in DIII, while Nolen Bowerman was fourth in the Weight Throw, tallying 14.29m.Â

Tommaso Maiocco was third in the Pole Vault (4.45m) and ranks 13th in the nation and first-year George Bourdier was fourth (4.30m) and lists 21st nationally.Â

WashU will next compete in 2023 on January 13 at Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute, Ind.
