Crawfordsville, Ind. – The No. 16 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team was edged by (RV) Wabash, 70-67, on Friday evening. The Bears are now 1-1 on the season.
After WashU took the lead with 40 seconds left on a
Charlie Jacob jumper, Wabash's Edreece Redmond put in a jumper to go up 68-67. Two free throws from the Little Giants' Sam Comer was fouled and hit both free throws to seal the deal.
Wabash went on an 11-2 run to open the game before the Bears called a timeout less than four minutes in. WashU chipped away at the Little Giants' lead, evening tying things up at 11:06.
Sophomore
Hayden Doyle kicked it to
Drake Kindsvater who slammed it home to start the run. Doyle,
Nate Bloedorn, Will Grudzinski and Calvin Capral each hit a jumper to bring the Bears within one point, 14-13. Wabash hit a jumper before Grudzinski netted a shot from distance to tie things up at 16 apiece. Another jumper from Doyle put WashU up 18-16 with 10:22 remaining in the first half.
A jumper from Capral and a pair of free throws from Kindsvater gave the Bears a 22-19 edge before Wabash's Vinny Buccilla drained a 3-pointer to tie things up at 22.
After Wabash tied things up again, 26-26, with 5:34, the Little Giants went on to score the next seven points to go up 33-26 with just under four minutes left in the half. A jumper from Champ McCorkle with 1:37 gave Wabash a 37-28 edge. Jacob netted a jumper in the paint for the Bears, sending the teams into halftime with the Little Giants leading 37-30.
WashU came out to score the first four points of the second half on jumpers from
Jake Wolf and Doyle to cut Wabash's lead to 37-34.
A 3-pointer from Redmond with 12:56 on the clock gave Wabash its first double-digit lead of the game, 50-40. Redmond extended that lead to 13 points following an and-one play.
A 3-pointer at 11:03 from first-year Yogi Oliff started a run for the Bears in which they closed the gap to six points. Kindsvater followed with a steal and a dunk as well as a pair of free throws.
Another dunk from Kindsvater and a jumper from Wolf at 7:55 cut the Little Giants' advantage to 57-53.
A jumper from Jacob followed by a jumper from Doyle at 3:24 brought the Bears within one point, 62-61. The teams traded points, keeping the difference at one point for several minutes until the final free throws with five seconds left.
WashU shot 27-for-59 and just 2-for-7 from 3-point range. The Bears out-rebounded Wabash 39-29.
Three WashU players reached double-figures, led by Jacob with 16 points and four rebounds as well as a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Kindsvater finished with 14 points and two steals and Doyle netted 10 points and four assists. Wolf scored eight points and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
Wabash had four players in double-figures, led by Buccilla with 15 points.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. game at Webster before returning home a week later for a 7 p.m. game against Millikin on November 22.
