Men's Soccer Collects Fifth Straight Shutout at Home in 0-0 Draw with Rochester

St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team posted a 0-0 tie on Sunday afternoon against UAA opponent Rochester at Francis Olympic Field. 
 
WashU moves to 5-3-1 (1-0-1, UAA) on the season, while the Yellowjackets are now 5-2-3 (0-1-1, UAA).
 
Additionally, WashU currently sits in third place in the UAA standings after Sunday.
 
Furthermore, the Bears have now shutout all five opponents they've faced at Francis Olympic Field and collect their first tie of the 2022 season. 
 
Matt Martin had a strong effort in goal and earned his fifth shutout of the season, tabbing six saves in the draw.
 
Statistically, Sunday's contest was nearly even, as WashU outshot UR 15-12 with both teams each attempting four corner kicks. 
 
Both defense's held firm all afternoon despite multiple great shot opportunities from both sides.
 
Owen Culver and Gavin Morse both tallied three shots apiece and Ryan An and Shiv Lamba both notched two shots each.
 
In the first half, Rochester had the first look on goal in the seventh minute on a diving save attempt from Martin.
 
The Bears nearly got on the board in the opening minutes after a great look from Lamba landed just wide from the far post in the 11th minute. 
 
The Yellowjackets had two good shots-on-goal attempts in the 20th and 21st minutes, but Martin made two nice saves to keep the shutout intact. 
 
Rochester fired off another shot-on-goal right before halftime as Martin recorded his fourth save of the half. 
 
After a scoreless first half, both teams tried to find early momentum in the second half of action. WashU's Gavin Morse got things started with two shots, including a header attempt that went just wide right.
 
Neither team could breakthrough despite 15 combined shot attempts in the second half. 
 
The Bears had a couple of unlucky breaks later on as Culver's shot attempt in the 74th minute hit the post and then Ethan Semelsberger's header hit off the top of the crossbar in the 80th minute. 
 
With under five minutes remaining, UR nearly scored on a shot towards the lower right of the goal, but not before Martin notched his sixth and final save of the day. 
 
WashU got one last good look from Zach Susee in the final two minutes, but the Bears were unable to capitalize.
 
WashU will next match up with Case Western Reserve on Friday evening at 5 p.m. at home.
