Men's Soccer Draws with CWRU, 1-1

St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team posted its second consecutive draw with a 1-1 decision against Case Western on Friday evening at Francis Olympic Field in UAA play.

The Bears move to 5-3-2, (1-0-2, UAA) while the Spartans sit at 6-2-3, (2-0-1, UAA) after Friday's contest.

After three UAA matches, WashU currently sits in fourth-place in the league standings with a total of five points.

Opportunities were limited from both sides on Friday, but WashU struck first in the 14th minute of play as Carl Vestberg recorded his second goal of the season for an early 1-0 WU advantage.

Vestberg scored off a pass from Landon Green, who placed it right over the Spartans' defense and Vestberg caught up to the ball and scored with a shot right through the keeper's feet.

In the first half, Case Western had three shots-on-goal, including two header attempts inside the box, but Matt Martin registered a save on each shot attempt, keeping the Bears ahead 1-0 at the break.

WashU had four shots in the second half, but only two landed on-goal. Shots from Joe Hipskind and John Daniels were saved by the Spartans' keeper.

The Bears' defense remained solid and held firm as CWRU continued its aggressive attack in the final minutes trying to tie the game up.

Case Western had an opportunity to score with under 10 minutes to play in a crowded box with heavy traffic, but the header shot was deflected and their second attempt landed wide.

However, with under one minute remaining, CWRU would score the equalizer with 55 seconds to play. The Spartans scored off a lob pass at the top of the 18-yard box that reached the far post and then connected on a shot that landed into the bottom corner of the goal to tie up the game.

It's the first goal that the Bears have given up at home this season, and it also snaps WashU's five straight shutout streak at Francis Olympic Field.

WashU's final shot attempt came in the 85th minute, as the Bears were unable to find a look on-goal in the closing seconds.

Case Western outshot WashU 10-9 for the contest and placed six shots-on-goal for the evening, as the Bears tallied four.

Matt Martin logged five saves in goal for the Bears, while Owen Culver and John Daniels each tallied two shots apiece.

WashU will return to Francis Olympic Field on Sunday at 11 a.m. against No. 14 Carnegie Mellon for Senior Day.
