St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team put together a complete team effort and performance on Tuesday evening, as the Bears shutout Millikin 3-0 at Francis Olympic Field.
With the victory, WashU wins its third in a row and improves to 5-3 overall on the season. Additionally, the Bears remain unbeaten at home and move to 4-0 thus far.
Through eight games in the 2022 season, WU has produced four shutout victories, with all four occurring at Francis Olympic Field.
WashU nearly struck first in the first two minutes of the contest, but an offsides call negated a goal.
However, the Bears wasted little time in taking the early lead on Tuesday, scoring their first goal 10 minutes into the contest for a quick 1-0 edge.
Shiv Lamba put WU on the board on a goal scored in the box off a pass from
Zach Susee, who delivered the assist placing his pass to Lamba precisely, as he ripped a shot past the feet of the Millikin goalkeeper.
The chances continued to increase for WashU, who outshot MU 11-4 in the opening half, as they continued to apply pressure on Millikin's defense while dominating the possession for a majority of the half.
WashU would extend its lead out to 2-0 after Susee recorded his second assist of the night off a corner kick, as he found
Nate Vota, who's one-touch header landed into the back of the net for a goal.
Leading 2-0 heading into the half, WashU would put the game out of reach early in the second half, following a goal scored from
Owen Culver in the 57
th minute.
Culver worked his way past multiple Millikin defenders and found an opening of space inside the box before putting the ball into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the year.
The St. Louis native and Webster Groves product is currently tied for third in goals scored in the UAA and is tied for second in points with 13.
Millikin fired off six shots in the second half and almost scored in the second half on a near breakaway opportunity, but
Matt Martin made a fantastic save to keep the shutout alive.
Martin earned his fourth shutout of the year when it was all said and done and recorded his fifth win in goal this season, posting five saves in the win.
Statistically, the Bears tallied 21 shots and outshot the Big Blue 21-10. WashU finished the match with 12 shots-on-goal. Culver and
Armando Sanchez-Conde each notched three shots apiece to lead the Bears' attack.
WashU will return to UAA action at home on Sunday at 11 a.m. against Rochester.
