Riverdale, N.Y. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team was shutout on Sunday afternoon at NYU, falling 3-0 in University Athletic Association (UAA) league play.
With the loss, WashU drops to 6-5-2 on the year and slips to 2-2-2 in the UAA standings.
It was a tough outing for the Bears, who had trouble creating consistent shot attempts on Sunday, finishing with only six shots in the contest and one shot-on-goal.
WashU outshot the Violets 5-4 in the first 45 minutes of play, as
Owen Culver tried to provide an early spark and put the Bears on the board.
Culver posted the two first shot attempts on Sunday for WU's offensive attack, but he missed just to the right and the other shot went high, keeping the match scoreless.
The Bears' best shot attempt of the afternoon was from
Nathan Szpak late in the half, but it was saved by NYU's keeper in the 40th minute.
NYU scored its first goal of the day in the 18th minute of action on an unassisted goal from forward Joe Leslie.
Roughly 20 minutes later, the Violets would add to their lead, scoring on a header into the back of the net off a pass from a free kick attempt.
NYU would take a 2-0 lead heading into the half and Leslie, who scored the first goal of the match, scored his second goal of the day in the 58th minute for a 3-0 cushion.
The Bears were limited to just one shot in the second half, coming from
Reece Nicholson in the 49th minute of play.
In goal,
Matt Martin posted two saves while both Culver and Szpak each provided two shots apiece to lead the offense.
The Bears will look to regroup and will next get set for their regular season finale at No. 1 Chicago on November 5.
