Men's Soccer Defeats No. 14 Carnegie Mellon 2-1 on Senior Day

St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team recorded a 2-1 victory over No. 14 Carnegie Mellon on Senior Day at Francis Olympic Field to close out its home regular season slate on Sunday afternoon.

Before Sunday's contest began, Hudson Hazlewood, Shiv Lamba, Matt Martin, Gavin Morse, Armando Sanchez-Conde, and Sergio Rivas (currently playing professionally with St. Louis City SC) were all recognized.

With the victory, WashU improves to 6-3-2 (2-0-2, UAA) and moves into sole possession of second place in the league standings.

In addition, the Bears conclude the home regular season with a 5-0-2 overall record.

Neither team had many chances in the opening half, as shots were even at 4-4. The Bears' best looks came from Owen Culver and Eugene Heger in the 31st and 36th minutes, but both shots were saved by CMU.

In the second half, there were 17 combined shots between both teams and three goals scored all within a seven-minute span.

Carnegie Mellon struck first in the 55th minute, scoring off a Bears' miscue. WashU turned the ball over and lost possession right outside the 18-yard box, as the Tartans drove in and scored a goal from seven-yards out for a 1-0 edge.

However, the Bears responded right back with the tying goal just minutes later after Zach Susee found Nathan Szpak in the box, before he drilled a shot into the back of the net to even the score at 1-1.

WashU would then keep the momentum on its side and scored the game-winning goal in the 61st minute off a corner kick from Armando Sanchez-Conde

Sanchez-Conde perfectly placed the ball towards the far post where Joseph Hipskind was there as he ripped a shot in the net for his second goal of the season.

Carnegie Mellon made one final push to try and find the equalizer in the last 20 minutes with five shot attempts, but the Bears' defense was solid and kept the Tartans from scoring.

Matt Martin notched his sixth win in goal for the Bears and tallied six saves in the victory.

Offensively, WashU registered 11 shots on Sunday with five shots-on-goal. Culver and Hipskind led the Bears with three shot attempts apiece.

WashU will next travel to Brandeis for another UAA matchup on Friday at 5:00 p.m. EST.
