Rome, Ga. – Phuc Huynh and
Abhi Ramireddy of the Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Cup in doubles, earning a three-set victory over Emory University on Thursday evening at the Rome Tennis Center in the round of 16.
The duo defeated and fought past Ryan Glanville and Charlie James of Emory in a tight battle down to the wire, winning by a narrow margin of 7-6 (9), 6-7 (5), 10-2.
After the first two sets were split in tiebreakers that went neck-and-neck, the match was ultimately decided in a 10-point tiebreaker. However, the Bears came up clutch, dominating the tiebreaker in a convincing 10-2 decision.
Huynh/Ramireddy will face James and Thomas Yu of Johns Hopkins tomorrow in the quarterfinal round.
In singles action, Ramireddy also competed in the main draw after capturing the singles and doubles ITA Regional titles in September to receive an automatic bid into the field.
Furthermore, both Huynh/Ramireddy earned ITA All-American honors after winning the ITA Regional title at Tao Tennis Center in September.
This marks the second consecutive year that Ramireddy will be selected as an ITA All-American.
The senior earned a first-round victory over Rox Rogers of George Fox in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the quarters of the main draw.
However, in the quarterfinal match against Reid Staples of Bowdoin, Ramireddy was upended 7-5, 6-1.
Tomorrow, Ramireddy will match up against Thomas Yu of Johns Hopkins in the consolation round.
Match play will continue tomorrow at the ITA Cup with the quarterfinals and semifinals of doubles slated to be played.
