Atlanta, Ga. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team collected a 2-1 road victory at Emory University on Saturday in Atlanta in University Athletic Association play.
The Bears win their second straight contest and earn their first road win of the year, as they improve to 4-3-0, (1-0-0, UAA) on the season.
In the first half, opportunities and chances for the Bears were limited, as WU posted just one shot-on-goal.
The Bears' only look in the first half came from
John Daniels in the 28th minute as his shot was saved by Emory.
Defensively, WashU fought off multiple attacks from the Eagles. Emory fired off four shots-on-goal in a 10-minute span, but
Matt Martin was able to record a save on each shot attempt to keep the contest scoreless.
Emory had many great chances and finished with nine shots in the first half, but Martin and the Bears' defense were solid and resolute, as both teams went into the half at 0-0.
WashU came out aggressive and applied pressure on the Emory defense in the early going of the second half.
In the 52nd minute of action, WashU scored the first goal of the contest.
After the Bears had three shots inside the box, two from
Eugene Heger, and one from
Gavin Morse that all landed off the far and near post,
Armando Sanchez-Conde drilled a shot into the back of the net off the friendly bounce.
Sanchez-Conde scored his first goal of the 2022 season and both Heger and Morse were rewarded with the assist.
The Bears would score the dagger with less than 15 minutes to play after Emory had a great chance to tie up the contest but missed the shot off the post.
Once regaining possession,
Nathan Szpak found
Carl Vestberg near midfield, who dished it off to
Ryan An, as he dribbled his way down to the edge of the box before slipping it back to Vestberg, who then kicked it through Emory's keeper's legs for a 2-0 advantage.
In addition, Vestberg's game-winning goal marks the first of his WashU career.
The Bears' defense continued to withstand pressure from Emory, but the Eagles would break through with less than four minutes to play off a shot scored from inside the box.
However, WashU would stand tall and would turn away any late efforts from Emory in the final minutes to secure the win.
Despite getting outshot 20-12, both teams placed six shots-on-goal in total with Martin logging four saves in the win.
WashU is back at Francis Olympic Field on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against Millikin.
