Cedar Rapids, Iowa, June 5, 2021 – The No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team lost 8-7 to No. 19 St. Thomas in its second game of the Division III World Series on Saturday.
WashU dips to 33-5 as the Tommies improve to 36-8.
St. Thomas singled with the runner and to second on the groundout. WashU attempted to pickoff the runner at second, but an interference advanced the runner to third. A sacrifice fly scored the first run of the game.
First-year Clayton Miller started the second off with a single, with junior Bo Anderson reaching first on an error from the second baseman. Senior Collin Kahal's RBI single tied the game up at 1-1.
Senior Ty Dalinghaus earned a walk to load up the bases followed by sophomore Hunter Goldberg's two-run single to take the lead at 3-1.
Junior Caleb Durbin singled and stole second to get the third inning rolling. Junior Andrew Huang singled to advance Durbin to third and Miller's single loaded up the bases. Anderson hit the sacrifice fly to put the Bears' fourth on the board.
The Tommies hit four singles in the fourth to tighten up the score to 4-3.
Junior Kyle Coates entered with one out in the fifth. Goldberg and Kahal made the play at third to catch a runner stealing and Coates struck out the final batter of the inning.
Dalinghaus, Goldberg and junior Tim Van Kirk singled to load up the bases early in the sixth. Junior Zac Styka entered to pinch hit, and recorded an RBI walk to make it a 5-3 game. The Tommies found runs in the sixth and seventh to tie up the game at 5-5.
First-year Magnus Dunn collected his first collegiate hit with a single up the middle. Durbin got on base and stole second, but the Bears were unable to find any runs in the eighth or ninth innings.
Senior Jared Fong, the top reliever in Division III, entered in the eighth to try to close out the game. He struck out the third batter in the ninth to force the game into extra innings.
St. Thomas hit two singles to start out the 10th, but Fong picked off the runner at second with the help of Van Kirk, struck out the next batter, and Dunn caught the final out in left field.
The 11th inning started with a walk for Dunn and Durbin's second homerun of the Series to put the Bears up 7-5.
Fong struck out the first batter and the second got on due to an error. Fong grabbed the groundout and threw to Anderson for the second out. A single to the right side put runners on first and third. A deep double to right center ran in two runs to tie up the game yet again. Fong struck out the batter for the final out of the inning.
Senior Tim Tague entered in the 12th to pitch and struck out his first two batters. But a single to center followed by a double to deep right center scored the final run for a St. Thomas win.
The Bears face Adrian on Sunday at 10 a.m.
