Decatur, Ill., May 27, 2021 - The No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team started the NCAA Tournament with a 2-0 win over Illinois College on Thursday.
WashU improves to 29-3 as the Blueboys dip to 21-18.
Senior Henry Singer got the game rolling in the first with a triple to right center followed by junior Caleb Durbin's RBI single to center.
First-year Clayton Miller singled and senior Collin Kahal earned a walk to start the second. Sophomore Hunter Goldberg's sacrifice bunt advanced Miller and Kahal to second and third with Miller scoring off of junior Tim Van Kirk's sacrifice fly to left field.
The Bears recorded five hits in four innings, including Singer's triple, a single and double from Miller and a double from Durbin.
Senior Mitchell Black struck out six batters, including four looking, during his eight innings on the mound. He only allowed two hits to earn his fourth win of the season.
Senior Jared Fong earned his ninth save of the season to set the program's single-season record. He has earned 10 saves in his career, ranking second on WashU's all-time list.
WashU faces Millikin on Friday at 3:45 p.m.
