St. Louis, Mo., May 16, 2021 — The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team defeated Kalamazoo 5-0 to win the NCAA Division III St. Louis Regional Sunday at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center.
The Bears (13-1) swept the doubles draw and picked up two quick singles wins to hand the Hornets (10-1) their first loss and advance to their 14th-consecutive NCAA quarterfinal.
Graduate student Scott Altmeyer and sophomore Abhi Ramireddy won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles while seniors Daniel Li and Benjamin van der Sman won 8-0 at No. 2, and senior Ethan Hillis and first year Gaurav Singh won 8-3 at No.3.
Hillis and Altmeyer picked up the singles points at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively to remain undefeated in singles play for the season. Hillis won 6-1, 6-1 to improve to 12-0 for the season while Altmeyer moved to 13-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win. Van der Sman, Li and Singh all held 1-0 set advantages at Nos. 3, 4, and 6 singles while Ramireddy led his first set 6-5 as the match ended.
WashU will face George Fox at 3:30 p.m. CST on Monday, May 24 in the Elite 8. George Fox defeated WashU's University Athletic Association rival Carnegie Mellon 5-4 to win the Nashville Regional.
