Men's Tennis Defeats Augustana (Ill.) in NCAA Second Round

St. Louis, Mo., May 15, 2021 — The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team defeated Augustana (Ill.) 6-0 Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. 

The two teams completed the doubles draw at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center before rain caused the match to move indoors for singles play at the Woodsmill Tennis Club in Chesterfield, Mo.

WashU swept doubles play with an 8-2 win by graduate student Scott Altmeyer and Abhi Ramireddy at No. 1, an 8-2 win by seniors Daniel Li and Benjamin van der Sman at No. 2 and an 8-1 win by senior Ethan Hillis and first year Gaurav Singh at No. 3.

Van der Sman's doubles win put him into WashU's 100-win club. He now owns 50 career singles wins and 50 doubles wins as a Bear.

Altmeyer won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles while Li won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 and Ramireddy won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 to round out WashU's scoring. The remaining matches went unfinished, but WashU's three other singles players all owned a 1-0 set advantage and led in the second set as the match ended.

The Bears (12-1) advance to face Kalamazoo (10-0) at 10 a.m. Sunday in the Regional Championship. The Hornets defeated Luther 5-1 earlier Saturday.
