St. Louis, Mo., May 1, 2021 - The No. 2 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team earned a pair of wins over Wabash on Saturday.
The Bears improve to 24-3 while the Little Giants dip to 18-15.
WashU honored its 11 seniors prior to game one.
Game 1: WashU 5, Wabash 0
Loutos moved to 8-1 from the mound, recording nine strikeouts in just over six innings.
First-year Clayton Miller got the Bears rolling in the first with a single through the left side. Junior Caleb Durbin followed with a two-run homer to left for an early 2-0 lead.
The Little Giants put two runners on with a walk and fielding error, but were unable to make anything happen in the top of the second.
Junior Andrew Huang singled through right to get on and advanced to second. Junior Zac Styka entered the game as a pinch hitter, and hit an RBI single to left for Huang to cross home plate.
Wabash found a pair of hits in the top of the fifth to add runners to second and third. Junior Bo Anderson caught a foul ball followed by Loutos grabbing a lineout to himself and striking the out the final batter.
Junior Tim Van Kirk singled through left and advanced all the home off of Miller's RBI double to left center to put the Bears up 4-0.
Durbin earned a walk and advanced to second on Huang's single through left. They each advanced a base on a wild pitch before Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to push the fifth run across the board in the seventh inning.
Fong came in to relieve in the seventh, facing eight batters and recording two strikeouts to secure the 5-0 win.
Game 2: WashU 15, Wabash 9
Senior Troy Bauer earned his fourth win of the season. He made quick work from the mound, striking out five of six batters faced in the second and third innings.
Van Kirk started out the game with a walk and advanced to third with a single from Miller. Huang crushed a deep homer to left field to put three runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning.
WashU's patience at the plate paid off in the bottom of the second, earning four walks to tack on a fifth run. Senior Collin Kahal singled and advanced all the way home from first-year Broghan O'Connor's double to left center.
The Bears loaded up the bases again in the fourth with a single, getting hit by a pitch and a walk. Huang's hit advanced Van Kirk to make the score 6-0.
Wabash found a run in the fifth inning after a pair of singles and wild pitches.
WashU had a huge fifth inning, recording seven runs. O'Connor loaded up the bases with zero outs with a perfect bunt. Van Kirk singled to shallow center to advance everyone one base, followed by a wild pitch to advance the runners yet again.
Miller hit a two-run single and advanced to third with Durbin's double. Miller scored on a fielding error and Durbin advanced home with LaMantia's sacrifice fly.
First-year Harry Mauterer recorded the first hit of his collegiate career with a single to right center. Kahal tallied the final run of the inning with his single to left field to make it a 13-1 game.
The Little Giants hit a three-run homer in the sixth and an RBI single in the seventh. The eighth inning tightened up the score to 13-9 with a two-run single and an RBI single and double.
WashU's offense picked back up in the eighth with a single from Kaden Bernhard followed by a two-run RBI from Van Kirk to clinch the 15-9 game, the highest number of runs the team has recorded this season.
