Box Score 2 St. Louis, Mo., May 1, 2021 — The Washington University in St. Louis softball team celebrated seniors Natasha Ramakrishnan and Kendall Schwartz in style Saturday at the WU Softball Field, picking up a doubleheader sweep over a tough Coe team.
Tami Wong hit two home runs to lift the Bears to a 7-5 win in the opener while WashU held off a late Coe surge to take a 5-4 win in the nightcap. The Bears improved to 11-9 while the Kohawks fell to 21-10.
Game 1
Wong had her second multi-home run game of the season, including a three-run blast in the sixth inning to score the winning runs.
Coe opened the game with a pair of runs in the first inning before Wong responded with a solo shot in the bottom of the inning. After a scoreless second, the Bears added three more runs in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead. Junior Nicole Hay hit a 2-run single in the third while Ramakrishnan hit a sacrifice fly to score Hay.
The Kohawks added one run in the fourth and two in the top of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead before Wong stepped up in the bottom of the inning for her game-winning homer.
The Bears had a solid defensive effort to back up starter Madison Denton (5-4) who allowed five runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Wong was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored while Schwartz scored two runs and junior Katie Gould stole two bases.
Game 2
WashU saw a 5-1 lead slip away in the sixth inning, but the Bears came through with some timely defensive stops to secure the doubleheader sweep.
WashU opened the scoring with an RBI single by first year Ashley Kennedy in the first inning. The Bears added a run in the third on a sac fly by Kennedy, a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Schwartz, and two runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Ramakrishnan and an RBI single by junior Kirsten Drabek to take a 5-1 lead into the sixth inning.
Coe stormed back with three runs in the sixth to threaten the WashU advantage. The Kohawks had runners on second and third with one out in the seventh inning before junior pitcher Holly Stoner closed out the game with a strikeout and a groundout to secure the win.
Stoner (6-4) struck out five and allowed four runs on 10 hits in the complete game effort. Kennedy was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs to lead the offense while sophomore Eimear Cunningham was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
The Bears host Fontbonne for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday, May 2, at the WU Softball Field to close the regular season.
