Storm Lake, Iowa, April 25, 2021 – The No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team wrapped up its weekend in Iowa with a 7-5 comeback win in game three of its weekend series.
WashU improves to 22-3 while Buena Vista moves to 11-17.
Miller earned a walk and stole second and advanced home with junior Zac Styka's RBI single to center field to take the lead 1-0 in the fifth.
The Beavers found a run in the bottom of the inning to tie up the game at one run apiece.
WashU had an additional chance to take the lead in the sixth after first-year Broghan O'Connor walked and advanced to third on two wild pitches. Senior Ty Dalinghaus also earned a walk and advanced to second from junior Tim Van Kirk's sacrifice bunt.
Buena Vista put its second run on the board in the sixth inning with an RBI double. Senior Tim Tague entered the game and struck out the first two batters he faced to end the inning.
The Beavers tallied three additional runs in the eighth to increase its lead to 5-1 heading into the final inning.
The Bears had a huge ninth hitting, pushing six runs across. Durbin, Huang and Styka were all hit by a pitch to load the bases. Senior Johnny LaMantia hit a two-run single followed by an RBI single from junior Bo Anderson hit RBI singles to right to tighten up the score 4-5.
Senior Collin Kahal's hit turned into a fielder's choice when the third baseman could not decide who to try to throw out, loading up the bases yet again. All three runners advanced on a wild pitch, with LaMantia's run tying the score at 5-5.
Van Kirk hit the go-ahead run with a two-RBI single to secure the 7-5 win for the Bears.
