Montgomery, Ill., April 2, 2021 – The No. 2 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team swept No. 5 Aurora in Friday's doubleheader.
The Bears continue an undefeated season, improving to 14-0, while the Spartans suffer its first losses and dip to 13-2.
Game 1 – WashU 3, Aurora 2
Senior Ryan Loutos pitched eight innings to earn his fifth win of the season. He recorded 12 strikeouts for the third time, which ranks eighth in program history for most strikeouts in a single game. Loutos owns the record with 15 strikeouts.
The game remained scoreless through the first three innings, with junior Zac Styka hitting an RBI double in the fourth to get the Bears on the board.
Junior Caleb Durbin hit an RBI single in the fifth, and advanced to third off of an error. Senior Johnny LaMantia followed with a single of his own to allow Durbin to score and put WashU up 3-0.
The Spartans found runs in the eighth and ninth inning, but it wasn't enough to tie up the game.
Game 2 – WashU 6, Aurora 2
Senior Troy Bauer pitched five innings to earn his third win from the mound.
WashU had a dominant second inning, scoring five runs. Junior Tim Van Kirk earned two RBIs off of his hit with the bases loaded. Van Kirk and O'Connor showed off their speed as they were able to steal second and home on one play.
Freshman Clayton Miller hit an RBI double to center to advance Van Kirk home. Junior Caleb Durbin followed with his sixth double of the season to score the fifth run.
Junior Bo Anderson hit his second homer of the season in the eighth inning to score WashU's final run of the game. Aurora scored runs in the third and ninth, but could not come back as the Bears clinched the 6-2 win.
