St. Louis, Mo., April 18, 2021 – The No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team matched up with Spalding for a second day of doubleheaders on Sunday.
WashU improves to 21-1 while the Eagles dip to 15-12 after the four-game series.
Game 1: WashU 4, Spalding 1
Senior Mitchell Black got things rolling from the mound, with three up and three down in the top of the first inning. First-year Clayton Miller advanced his way around the bases on a pair of errors, and made it home with junior Caleb Durbin's sacrifice fly.
Spalding tied up the game 1-1 in the fourth with an RBI single.
Junior Bo Anderson singled in the sixth, advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third from senior Henry Singer's hit, and scored off of a defensive error to take back the lead at 2-1.
Senior pitcher Tim Tague entered the game in the seventh to provide relief for Black with senior Jared Fong closing out the game in the ninth.
Anderson singled up the middle and advanced to second from a sacrifice bunt from senior Ty Dalinghaus. Senior Henry Singer's single advanced Anderson to third with Anderson scoring off of a wild pitch. Senior Collin Kahal's bunt put Singer across the plate to clinch the 4-1 victory at the end of the eighth inning.
Game 2: WashU 4, Spalding 0
Miller made his second appearance from the mound this season, pitching three innings and earning his first win.
Junior Caleb Durbin earned a walk and made it to third off of senior Johnny LaMantia's single to center field. During LaMantia's steal attempt at second, Durbin stole home to put the first run on the board.
Run number two came in the third inning with an RBI single through left from Anderson to improve the lead to 2-0.
Spalding had a chance to score in the fifth with a runner on third, but WashU made the out at home plate. LaMantia doubled in the bottom of the inning followed by an RBI double from Anderson to make it a 4-0 game.
The Bears made quick work of the following four innings to wrap up the weekend sweep.
