St. Louis, Mo., April 17, 2021 – The No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team won a pair of games over Spalding on Saturday.
The Bears improve to 19-1 as the Eagles dip to 15-10.
Game 1: WashU 7, Spalding 1
Senior Ryan Loutos had another dominant day at the mound, earning his seventh win of the season. He recorded 12 strikeouts for the fourth time this season.
Junior Tim Van Kirk made his way around the bases in the first with a stolen base and advancing home off of a wild pitch to put the first run on the board.
Junior Caleb Durbin hit a single, advanced two bases on a defensive error, and scored off a junior Bo Anderson's sacrifice fly.
Van Kirk and freshman Clayton Miller hit back-to-back singles to start the sixth inning with sophomore Broghan O'Connor pinch running for Miller. Each were able to advance on a wild pitch and score off of junior Caleb Durbin's hit to make the score 4-0.
Spalding scored its lone run in the seventh with an RBI single.
WashU scored three runs in the eighth, with senior Johnny LaMantia's RBI double and senior Collin Kahal's RBI single to end the game 7-1.
Game 2: WashU 3, Spalding 2
Spalding was the first to score in the second game, recording a run in the top of the third.
Durbin's RBI double followed by Anderson's RBI single put WashU up 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
The Eagles tied up the game 2-2 in the seventh after tallying a few hits.
The Bears recorded three hits in the seventh and eighth but were not able to advance anyone home.
Anderson received a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball in the ninth inning. Speedy first-year Magnus Dunn entered the game as a pinch runner and advanced to third off of Kahal's at-bat. He was unable to score with the third out of the inning coming in the next at-bat.
Junior Andrew Huang hit the walk-off homerun in the 11th inning to clinch the Bears' 3-2 win. It was the first homer of his collegiate career.
