No. 2 Baseball Splits with No. 4 Webster

Sauget, Ill., April 11, 2021 – The No. 2 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team split a pair of games with No. 4 Webster on Sunday. 

The Bears move to 17-1 as the Gorloks dip to 19-5. 

WashU's 17-0 start to the season is a program-best in at least 44 years. 

Game 1: WashU 3, Webster 2 

Both teams started their respective top pitchers to dual from the mound. Loutos recorded four strikeouts and earned his sixth win of the season. 

Webster found three hits to load the bases in the bottom of the third, but  Loutos was able to strike out a batter swinging and junior Bo Anderson caught a foul ball to end the inning. 

Junior Caleb Durbin hit a double in the fourth followed by senior Johnny LaMantia's RBI single for the first run of the game. The Gorloks put two on the board in the fifth after a collision in the outfield allowed an inside the park homerun. 

Freshman Clayton Miller hit a double right down the left field line to start off the ninth inning. Junior Durbin crushed a homerun way out of the park on the first pitch to clinch the 3-2 win. 

Game 2: WashU 1, Webster 7 

Anderson hit his third homer of the season in the second to give the Bears an early lead. The Gorloks countered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI triple, a sacrifice fly and an RBI single to make the score 3-2. 

WashU recorded two hits in the third but were unable to advance anyone home. After a slew of walks to load the bases, Webster scored an additional three runs with a two-run RBI from a ground-rule double and an RBI single. Webster put one more on the board in the seventh with a sacrifice bunt to seal a 7-1 win.
