Box Score 2 Jacksonville, Ill., March 13, 2021– The Washington University in St. Louis softball team struggled against a tough Wartburg defense Saturday, falling to the No. 20 Knights 9-0 and 10-0 in two six-inning games.
Originally scheduled as home games for the Bears, the matchup was moved to Illinois College in Jacksonville, Ill., due to wet conditions in St. Louis. WashU couldn't get any offense going throughout the day, managing just three hits over the two games. The Bears fell to 2-5 on the season while the Knights improved to 9-1.
Game 1
Game 1 started out as a defensive stalemate as the two teams stood at 0-0 after four innings. WashU's best scoring chance came in the second inning when Sophomore Payton Irwin knocked a double and was advanced to third by Ashley Kennedy only to be stranded.
The Knights finally broke through with a six-run fifth inning before adding three more in the sixth and WashU couldn't find any answers. Junior Katie Gould accounted for WashU's only other hit in the matchup while Madison Denton (1-2) suffered the pitching loss.
Game 2
Nicole Hay broke up Wartburg starter Ashley Nelson's no-hitter with a single in the fifth inning, and that was as much offense as the Bears could muster. Sophomore Tami Wong drew two walks in game 2 while junior Holly Stoner (1-2) suffered the pitching loss.
