Box Score 2 Fulton, Mo., March 10, 2021– The Washington University in St. Louis softball team split a pair of games with Westminster (Mo.) on Wednesday.
WashU moves to 2-3 and the Blue Jays dip to 5-5 overall.
Westminster (Mo.) 9, WashU 8 – Game 1
Sophomore Payton Irwin hit a two-RBI home run in the top of the second to make the score 4-2 after Westminster's strong first inning.
Sophomore Tami Wong hit a homer in the third followed by an RBI-single in the fourth inning to tie up the game 4-4.
WashU had a huge sixth inning, recording four runs. Junior Katie Gould scored followed by Wong off of senior Natasha Ramakrishnan's sacrifice fly to center. Freshman Ashley Kennedy hit an RBI-double and sophomore Kayla Nommensen wrapped up the inning with an RBI-single to make the score 8-4.
Westminster had a big sixth inning themselves, recording four runs to tie up the game once again at 8-8. They found the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh to edge the Bears 9-8.
WashU 10, Westminster (Mo.) 5 – Game 2
WashU's offense dominated in game two, recording at least one run in every inning, totaling 10 runs on 12 hits. Junior pitcher Holly Stoner earned her first win of the season after only allowing one hit in just over three innings on the mound.
Ramakrishnan got things rolling in the first by recording an RBI double allowing Gould to score after she walked and made it to second on a wild pitch.
Nommensen hit a two-RBI double to wrap up the Bears' three-run first inning. The Blue Jays countered in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs of their own.
Wong and Irwin hit their second home runs of the day in the second and third innings to reclaim the team's lead 5-4.
Wong's sacrifice fly in the fourth gave senior Kendall Schwartz time to score. Her trip around the bases included a walk, Gould's sacrifice bunt, and a passed ball.
Junior Nicole Hay and Nommensen hit back-to-back homers in the top of the fifth inning to expand the Bears' lead. The Blue Jays scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 8-5.
Wong hit a second sacrifice fly in the sixth to advance freshman Emily Talkow home. Irwin doubled to start off the seventh and Hay hit an RBI single to score the final run of the game.
