Box Score 2 St. Louis, Mo., Feb. 29, 2020 – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team opened the 2020 season with a sweep of Westminster College Saturday at Maryville University in St. Louis.
WashU won the opener 6-2 and then recorded a 9-4 win the nightcap. The Bears had nine hits in each win.
WashU improved to 2-0 with the win, while Westminster dropped to 0-2.
WashU 6, Westminster 2 – Game One
Freshman Tami Wong went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk in game one, while seniors Mikaela Arredondo (2-for-3, two runs) and Amy Walsh (2-for-4, run, RBI) had multi-hit games for WashU.
Wong drove in a run with a triple to right center to push the lead to 2-0 after three, and then the lead grew to 4-1 after Walsh drove in a run with an infield single. Sophomore Nicole Hay added an RBI single in the fifth to push the lead to 5-2.
Sophomore Madison Denton (1-0) tossed a complete game allowing five hits and two earned runs.
WashU 9, Westminster 4 – Game Two
Sophomore Holly Stoner (1-0) tossed a complete game in game two allowing four hits and three earned runs.
WashU scored four runs in the second inning to jump in front 4-0, highlighted by a two-run triple down by Walsh.
Westminster answered back with three runs in the top of the third, and then Wong led off the bottom half of the inning with the first home run of her career to make it 5-3.
The Bears put the game out of reach with four runs in the fifth, as sophomore Katie Gould drove in two runs with a single to right.
Gould (2-for-4, three RBI) and Walsh (2-for-4, three RBI) combined to drive in six runs, while Hay was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
UP NEXT: WashU hosts Carroll College (Wis.) on Sunday, March 1, in a doubleheader at O'Fallon Family Sports Park in O'Fallon, Ill. Game one will begin at Noon.
