St. Louis, Mo., April 6, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team opened University Athletic Association (UAA) play with a doubleheader split in a pair of one-run games with Emory University Saturday at the WU Softball Field in St. Louis. The Bears won game one 6-5 and then dropped the finale 3-2.

WashU dropped to 9-8 and 1-1 in the UAA, while Emory had its 11-game win streak snapped and dropped to 19-5 and 5-1 in the UAA.

Junior outfielder Mikaela Arredondo went 5-for-8 with a run scored and three RBIs in the doubleheader. Arredondo upped her average 47 points from .286 to .333 with the five hits. 

WashU 6, Emory 5 – Game One
Senior Taylor Arends went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored in the game one victory, while Arredondo was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. The Bears had 10 hits.

WashU scored two runs on three hits in the third to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Arends and freshman Kirsten Drabek each had RBI singles in the inning for the Bears. Emory responded with two runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game.

The Bears batted around in the bottom of the fourth and had four runs on three hits to take a commanding 6-2 lead. Arends drove in two runs with a single up the middle, and then Arredondo ripped the first pitch to left for an RBI double.

Emory scored two runs in the sixth and then added a tally in the seventh to make it 6-5, but junior Amy Walsh threw out her second runner of the game at the plate to keep it a one-run game. Freshman Holly Stoner recorded the first save of her career after getting out of a second and third jam with one out in the seventh. 

Freshman Madison Denton (6-3) made the start on the mound and allowed eight hits and five earned runs in six innings. 

Emory 3, WashU 2 – Game Two
Freshman Katie Gould went 3-for-4 in game two, while Arredondo was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and Walsh added two hits. The Bears had eight hits and committed two errors in the second game.

Sophomore Abby Graegin (1-5) took the loss in game two allowing six hits and two earned runs in three innings pitched. Stoner was tremendous in relief allowing one hit and one earned run in four innings.

WashU tied the game in the third with a two-out RBI single to right from Arends. Emory added a run in the fourth and the seventh to extend the lead to 3-1.

In the seventh, Gould and Walsh singled with one out and then Arredondo drove in a run with a two-out RBI single to right to make it 3-2. Drabek grounded out to end the contest. 

WashU closes out the four-game series with Emory on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
