St. Louis, Mo., April 28, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team could not keep the Case Western Reserve University offense at bay in a pair of losses Sunday at the WU Softball Field in St. Louis.

WashU suffered a 14-6 loss in six innings in game one, and then the Bears dropped a 9-2 decision in the final game of the four-game series.

Case outscored WashU 35-15 in the four-game sweep.

Case 14, WashU 6 (Six Innings) – Game One
Junior Mikaela Arredondo was 4-for-4 with two RBIs in the game one loss as WashU recorded 14 hits. Freshman Katie Gould added three hits and two runs scored, while freshman Kirsten Drabek had a pair of hits and an RBI.

The Bears scored first after Drabek drove in a run with an RBI single to left with two outs. Case scored two runs in the second and added three in the third on a long homerun to center by Melissa Cuellar to make it 5-1.

WashU scored two runs in the third to trim the lead to 5-3, highlighted by an RBI double by Arredondo. The Bears tied the game with two runs in the fourth after Gould stole home and then Walsh scored on an RBI after Arredondo singled to left.

Case put the game out of reach by scoring eight runs on six hits in the fifth. The Spartans recorded 15 hits in the victory.

Freshman Madison Denton made the start and allowed nine hits and seven earned runs in five innings pitched, while sophomore Kendall Schwartz took the loss allowing five hits and seven earned runs in 1/3 of an inning.

Case 9, WashU 2 – Game Two
The Spartans jumped out to a commanding 7-0 lead after 2 ½ innings. Drabek and freshman Nicole Hay each drove in a run in the third inning to cut the Case lead to 7-2. 

The Spartans added a pair of runs in the sixth inning to round out the scoring. 

Junior Amy Walsh went 3-for-4 with a run scored and Hay was 2-for-3 with an RBI as WashU had eight hits and committed a season-high five errors.

Freshman Holly Stoner (3-2) took the loss allowing five hits and six runs (four earned) in 2 1/3 innings pitched, while junior Hannah McCall allowed six hits and three runs (two earned) in 3 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.

WashU closes out the 2019 season at home Tuesday with a doubleheader against Greenville University. Game one is set for 3 p.m.
