Kissimmee, Fla., March 12, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team wrapped up its 2019 Spring Break Trip Tuesday with a split at The Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.

WashU scored six runs in the fifth inning en route to a 10-2 win in six innings over Gettysburg in the opener, and then suffered a 5-4 loss to Thomas More University in the finale. The Bears did not commit an error in either game. 

WashU 10, Gettysburg 2 (Six Innings) – Game One
Freshman Madison Denton tossed her third-straight complete game in the first game of the day allowing five hits and two earned runs. Denton struck out five and walked one. She has a 3-0 record with a 1.75 earned run average in 20.0 innings pitched. 

WashU had 12 hits in the opener, and four Bears recorded multi-hit games: senior Taylor Arends (2-for-4, run scored, RBI), junior Mikaela Arredondo (2-for-3, two runs scored), freshman Kirsten Drabek (2-for-4, two runs scored, RBI) and senior Josi Elder (2-for-4, run scored, two RBIs). Freshman Kendall Schwartz also recorded three walks.

An RBI single by Arends gave WashU an early 1-0 lead after one, and then the Bears exploded for six runs on seven hits in the fifth to break open the game. WashU had six different players drive in a run in the fifth. 

Elder added a two-run single to left in the sixth inning. 

Thomas More 5, WashU 4 – Game Two
WashU had eight hits in game two and stranded seven runners. Arends went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored, while Arredondo was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

WashU trailed 2-0 before its first at-bat, but responded with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning to take the 3-2 lead. Arredondo doubled to left to drive in the first run, and then Arends scored on a sac fly by Drabek. Freshman Nicole Hay delivered a two-out RBI single to give the Bears a one-run lead.

Thomas More scored two runs in the fourth to take a 4-3 advantage, but Drabek doubled to left to tie the game. TMU's Alex DeDreu doubled with two outs in the sixth for the game-winning hit.

Sophomore Abby Graegin (0-2) took the loss despite giving up just three hits and one earned run in four innings pitched. Freshman Holly Stoner made the start and allowed six hits and four runs (two earned) in three innings pitched

WashU (4-2) returns home to host The Schutt Invitational-I on Saturday-Sunday, March 16-17, at the WU Softball Field. The Bears have two games on Saturday vs. DePauw (1-2) at 1:15 p.m. and Wartburg (10-2) at 3:30 p.m.
