WashU Leads UAA T&F Championships After Day 1

Pittsburgh, Pa., April 28, 2018 – Washington University in St. Louis leads both the men's and women's portion of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Track & Field Championships after day one of competition in Pittsburgh on Saturday.

The No. 12-ranked WashU women have totaled 81 points in seven events that were scored to outpace second place Chicago (67). The Bears men have earned 83 points after the same six events and are ahead of second place Carnegie Mellon (61).

The Bears men and women dominated both steeplechase events, scoring 21 points on the women's side and 29 on the men's side. Senior Alison Lindsay led the women with a time of 10:42.71. Sophomore Marco Quaroni led the men with a time of 9:24.80 as graduate student Dillon Williams (9:28.40), junior Tommy Fruhauf (9:29.52) and sophomore Jack Sebok (9:30.91) finished second through fourth.

Following Lindsay with a third place finish was junior Abby Martin (11:04.98), senior Anna Maurer (11:15.54) with a fifth place effort and junior Molly Shepherd (11:31.36) with an eighth place finish.

Both the men and women also led the 4x800m relay packs. The men's team consisted of sophomore Jon Fleming, freshman Tucker Cera, senior Elvir Sarajlic and freshman John Harry Wagner (7:44.29). The women's team of sophomore Sara Mesiano, senior Audrey Western, senior Annalise Wagner and freshman Sophie Grigaux finished more than 10 second ahead of the runner-ups with a time of 9:09.83.

The WashU women also had first place efforts by junior Heidi Nassos in the pole vault (3.85m) and freshman Randal Walker in the shot put (12.73m). Nassos' clearance was nearly a career-high as she took first over freshman teammate Julia Dannenbaum in number of jumps.

The Bears men also fared well in the pole vault with senior Jacob Rother (4.58m), junior Tim Goblirsch (4.48m) and sophomore Brandon Hutchison (4.48m) placing second through fourth.

Additionally, Nassos posted a third place finish in the long jump with a distance of 5.26m while senior Ezugo Onejeme led the WashU men with a second place effort and jump of 6.70m.

Senior David O'Gara placed third in the 10,000m run during the evening portion of the UAA Championships on Saturday. He finished the race in 31:46.34. Junior Lisa Gorham finished fourth for the women in the 10,000m with a time of 37:06.13.
