No. 15 WashU Splits Doubleheader with Webster

St. Louis, Mo., March 4, 2018 – The No. 15-ranked Washington University in St. Louis softball team opened the 2018 season with a doubleheader split at home against Webster University Sunday at the WU Softball Field.

Senior pitcher Anna McKee tossed a two-hitter in the 5-1 win in game one, and the Gorloks scored four runs in the first inning in a 5-0 victory in game two.

WashU 5, Webster 1 – Game One
Freshman catcher Julia Flores went 2-for-2 with a double, run scored and an RBI in her collegiate debut. She also threw out her only runner trying to steal second from her knees. 

WashU had four hits in the opening inning of the season, and put across one run on a two-RBI single to right by senior Hera Tang. In the second, sophomore Hannah McCall delivered the first RBI of her career and then junior Taylor Arends smoked a two-RBI center to center to make it 4-0.

The Bears added a run in the fifth after Flores doubled to left with two outs.

WashU had 10 hits in the season-opening win, including a pair of hits from senior Maggie Clapp (2-for-3, run scored) and sophomore Amy Walsh (2-for-4, two runs scored).

McKee (1-0) allowed two hits and one earned run in the win. She struck out four and walked eight. 

Webster 5, WashU 0 – Game Two
Webster scored four runs in the first inning off Clapp on just two hits, and took advantage of a pair of errors and a passed ball.

The Bears were limited to just five hits in the loss, and also committed three errors.

Clapp (0-1) took the loss allowing four runs (two earns) on eight hits.

WashU opens a six-game Spring Break road trip in Florida against No. 20 Ithaca College on Sunday, March 11.
