Clapp Tosses Two-Hit Shutout in Win Over Chicago

St. Charles, Mo., March 30, 2018– Senior Maggie Clapp tossed a two-hit shutout to lead the Washington University in St. Louis softball team to a 9-0 victory in five innings over the University of Chicago in game two of a doubleheader Saturday in St. Charles, Mo.

WashU made six errors and issued seven walks in a 10-5 loss to Chicago in game one.

WashU dropped to 6-6 with the split, while Chicago fell to 9-7. The two teams close out a four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday, March 30, at the WU Softball Field. Game one is set for Noon. 

Chicago 10, WashU 5 – Game One
WashU scored in its first at-bat after RBI doubles by junior Taylor Arends and senior Hera Tang. The Bears added a run in the third after Arends tripled to right and then scored on a wild pitch.

After being shutout for the first four innings, Chicago scored four runs on five hits in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. The Maroons scored five runs in the sixth on two hits and took advantage of four walks to take a commanding 9-3 lead.

Tang added a two-RBI double in the seventh to round out the scoring.

Senior Anna McKee (4-2) took the loss allowing nine hits and seven earned runs in five innings pitched. McKee struck out five and walked two. Freshman Kendall Schwartzpitched the final two innings and did not allow a hit but was hampered by five walks. 

Tang was 3-for-4 with three RBIs as WashU was limited to seven hits. Arends was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two walks and an RBI. 

WashU 9, Chicago 0 (Five Innings) – Game Two
Clapp (2-2) was dominant in game two allowing just five base runners. She struck out two and walked one en route to her second-straight victory and 26thcareer win. 

WashU jumped out to a lead for the second game in a row after pushing across a run in the first and three in the second. 

Tang drove in a run with an RBI single in the first, her fourth RBI of the day. The Bears scored three unearned runs in the second on three hits, and took advantage of two errors. Arends had the lone RBI in the inning on a single to right.

WashU added five runs in the third to put the game out reach. Senior Mackenzie Gaudenripped a two-out single to left to drive in two runs, and then Arends doubled to right for two more runs. Clapp's single to left made it 9-0.

Arends was 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored and three RBIs, while sophomore Josi Elder was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. The Bears had 10 hits in game two.
