Bears' Track & Field Tops Leaderboard for 2nd Straight Week

Bloomington, Ill., Feb. 3, 2018 – The Washington University in St. Louis indoor track & field program worked their way first place finishes by the men and women for the second consecutive week in Bloomington, Ill. as the Bears secured victories during the Keck Division III Select Saturday evening.

The No. 16-ranked WashU women concluded the meet with 124 points to outpace runner-up and host Illinois Wesleyan's score of 108 points. Following the Bears and Titans were Augustana (71), Loras (52), Carthage (50), Monmouth (26), Millikin (20) and Rose-Hulman (seven).

The WashU men were the lone team in a group of seven to exceed 100 points. The Bears (107) outscored Illinois Wesleyan (83), Loras (59), Carthage (54.33), Rose-Hulman (50), Monmouth (47.66) and Millikin (23).

WOMEN

Freshman Julia Dannenbaum and junior Heidi Nassos are tied for the third best pole vault height in Division III after Saturday's event. Both Bears finished with a maximum height of 3.75m while Dannenbaum took first and Nassos second because of two additional misses on the jump prior to 3.75m.

Similarly, the Bears had one, two finishes in the mile run by senior Audrey Western and junior Abby Martin. Fractions of a second split the two's time with Western taking first with DIII's 17th best time of 5:03.95 (converted for the track size) while Martin's 5:04.01 ranks 18th.

Four women earned points with top-8 finishes for the Bears in the 800m as senior Annalise Wagner led the way with a first place effort (2:15.12). Her time was converted into 2:13.58 which ranks as the fifth best time in DIII.

Freshman Eka Jose had a strong showing for the Bears women, earning first in the triple jump (11.40m) and third in the long jump (5.43m). Jose's triple jump ranks 14th in DIII while her long jump ranks 27th.

MEN

Sophomore Nick Matteucci cruised to a first place finish in the 800m run with a time of 1:55.77 while teammates senior Thomas Gales (1:58.46) and freshman John Harry Wagner (1:59.00) followed with the second and third best times. Matteucci's time converts to 1:54.14 and ranks 14th in DIII.

The men's 4x400m relay consisting of junior Jason Singer, junior Eddie Wintergalen, Harry Wagner and sophomore Jon Fleming posted DIII's 16th best time (3:19.83* converted), while placing second overall at the meet.

The Bears had two additional first place efforts by freshman Tucker Cera in the mile (4:25.50) and sophomore Jack Sebok in the 3,000m run (8:51.97).
