Margolin Keeps Dealing as Daley's Double Sparks WashU Win

Box Score

St. Louis, Mo., May 12, 2017 – The No. 15-ranked Washington University in St. Louis baseball team opened a four-game series against University of Chicago on Friday, pulling out a close come from behind 3-2 victory capped off by a two out run scoring double by Ted Daley in the seventh inning.

WashU improved to 23-8 on the season, while Chicago moved to 22-12 as the Bears snapped the Maroons five-game win streak while picking up their fifth in the process. Picking up the victory for WashU was senior pitcher Brad Margolin as the Northbrook, Ill.-native pitched his fifth straight complete game.

Margolin surrendered two unearned runs in the fourth inning after Connor Hickey reached base on an error to lead things off. The Maroons hit two sacrifice flies to claim a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.

WashU answered back though on run scoring hits from sophomore Evan Nagel and senior Austin Darmawan. Sophomore Ethan Kuehl and senior Tate Maider scored on the base knocks after reaching base on a walk and single.

The Bears scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior Christian Santos had a one-out single before junior Conor O'Hara beat out a potential double play. He utilized his speed during Daley's at bat as he scored from first base on a double down the right field line that eluded the diving glove of Chicago. WashU took a 3-2 lead in which Margolin would not relinquish.

Margolin retired the final six batters in order including three strikeouts to pick up his 23rd career victory, moving him into a tie for fourth place in school history.

Darmawan, Santos and Maider stayed hot at the plate picking up multiple hits on the day, while Darmawan and Maider both finished with three hits apiece.

WashU and the Maroons will pick up the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. Be sure to stay up to date on all your Bears scores and awards by following @WashUBears on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
