Chicago, Ill., April 8, 2017 – Junior Anna McKee tossed a four-hit complete game shutout to lead the Washington University in St. Louis softball team to a 3-0 win in game one of a doubleheader Saturday at the University of Chicago. The Maroons posted a 3-1 victory in game two.

WashU 3, Chicago 0 – Game One
Sophomore Taylor Arends gave WashU the 3-0 lead in the Bears' first at-bat with a three-run homerun to left center. The homerun for Arends was her first of the year and third of career.

McKee (8-2) tossed her seventh complete game of the year and struck out 10. She got out of a jam in the second after senior Kenzie James threw a runner out at the plate, and then escaped bases loaded in the sixth with a fly out to left.

James went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Arends was 2-for-3 with a homerun, a run scored and three RBIs. Sophomore Josi Elder did not have an official at-bat after recording three walks. The Bears had six hits in the win.

Chicago 3, WashU 1 – Game Two
Chicago (11-8) jumped on junior starter Maggie Clapp for two runs on two hits in the second inning. Clapp got out of the inning with her fourth strikeout of the game. The Maroons added a run in the third to push the lead to 3-0.

The Bears ended a nine-inning scoreless drought in the fourth scoring one run on two hits. Junior Ashley Madsen singled to lead off the inning and then stole second. She came around to score on an RBI single by senior Hannah Mehrle.

WashU put together a rally in the fifth after junior Mackenzie Gauden and senior Halle Steinberg singled with two outs, but Madsen struck out to end the threat.

Clapp (5-5) took the loss in game two allowing six hits and three earned runs in five innings pitched. She struck out six and walked one. Gauden came in relief and pitched a perfect sixth inning. The Bears were limited to four hits in game two and committed two errors.

WashU (14-7) closes out the four-game series with two games Sunday at Chicago. First pitch in game one is at 11 a.m.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Chicago, 9-3, and the teams met for the first time since 2007 … Taylor had her 15-game reached base streak come to an end in game two … WashU is 13-2 when scoring first, and 1-5 when the opponent scores first … Senior Janet Taylor tied the WashU all-time walk record (64) in game one.
