Taylor Arends Drives in Four as No. 18 Softball Sweeps Greenville

Greenville, Ill., April 14, 2016 — Freshman Taylor Arends with 3-for-8 and drove in four runs to help lead the No. 18-ranked Washington University in St. Louis softball team to a doubleheader sweep at Greenville College Thursday in Greenville, Ill.

Senior Annie Pitkin tossed a one-hitter in a 9-0 victory in game one, and then the Bears posted a 6-1 win in the second game.

WashU improved to 28-8 with the two victories, while Greenville fell to 12-14-1.

#18 WashU 9, Greenville 0 – Game One
Pitkin (17-4) gave up a leadoff double in game one, but retired the next 21 batters she faced. She struck out eight and did not walk a batter en route to the 54th complete game of her career.

The Bears scored first in the top of the second after freshman Josi Elder reached on a fielder's choice.

In the third, WashU pushed across another run after junior Hannah Mehrle doubled to lead off the inning and then Arends singled through the left side to make it 2-0. Arends drove in another run in the fifth with a single up the middle to make it 3-0.

The Bears loaded the bases in the sixth after back-to-back singles from Elder and sophomore Ashley Madsen and then Mehrle got hit-by-pitch. Elder scored on a wild pith and then sophomore Hera Tang ripped a pitch to left to drive in two to make it 7-0.

Mehrle added a two-RBI double to left in the seventh to round out the scoring. Mehrle was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of doubles as WashU had 11 hits.

#18 WashU 6, Greenville 1 – Game Two
Greenville pushed across a run in the first inning against sophomore Maggie Clapp, scoring one run on three hits.

The Bears were held hitless for the first 3 1/3, but junior Janet Taylor broke up the no-hitter with an infield single in the fourth. Senior Brooke Hofer singled to center to move Taylor to third, and then two runs scored after a throwing error by Greenville third baseman to give WashU the 2-1 lead.

Greenville threatened in the bottom of the fourth getting a pair of runners on with one out, but Clapp got a ground ball and Arends made a great play to turn a 6-3 double play.

With the bases loaded in the fifth with two outs, Arends laced a first-pitch single to left driving in a pair of runs to make it 4-1. Hofer followed with an RBI single to make it 5-1.

Clapp added an RBI single with two outs in the seventh.

Clapp (9-4) tossed a complete game allowing seven hits and one earned run. She struck out six and walked one in the victory.

Hofer was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as WashU had seven hits. Taylor was 1-for-1 and was on base four times with two walks and a hit-by-pitch.

WashU hosts Principia College (3-17) in a doubleheader Friday, April 15. Game one is set to begin at 4 p.m.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Greenville 21-1 … The 28 wins in 2016 are tied for eighth most in a single season under head coach Leticia Pineda-Boutte … Hofer played in her 174th career game, tied for second most in school history … Taylor had her 21-game hitting streak snapped in game one, but has reached base in 29-straight contests … WashU did not strike out in either game … Arends and Taylor are tied for the team lead with 35 RBIs.
